Changing dyed hair color from dark brown to light brown

So my hair hasn't been dyed for like 4 months i think. It's very long, all the way down my lower back. My hair looks very healthy, because I don't do anything on it other than wash with herbal essences shampoo and conditioner, I don't blowdry, since it's straight it just looks good after it dries itself.

So I'm thinking of going from dark brown to very light golden brown, same color all over. I went to 2 places to ask how could that be done, if it would damage, how much would cost, etc.

Place #1: fancier place where they advertise being ''haircolorists'' under their name. They told me I'd need a whole morning and they'd have to remove the color with a color stripper. Then after that they could dye to a light golden brown. It'll cost around $160-180 (including a haircut).

Place #2: another place in town, ''salon and spa''. They told me bleaching would damage my hair too much and I'd have to highlight it gradually until the entire hair gets light enough so I'm able to dye an all over light brown color. That would take around 6 months, and that I have to wait 4 weeks in between highlights to do it again. First time with haircut would cost around $100, then without haircut would be around $80.

What would you do? Place #1 or #2? I'm obviously looking for the best result without obsessing with total cost. I'm just mentioning the cost to see if you ladies thinks it's appropriate or too good to be true or too expensive. After it gets light enough I'll be dying my hair at home like i've always done. I spend $20 on 2 of that Feria dye at the first couple times then when the color is set I spend $10 to dye it. But I need help now to get it to the point I can dye that color.

You have really beautiful healthy hair. As a man I can only tell you second hand info since I don't have long hair and I've never done anything to my hair. Stripping is bad, when the hair is colored again it looks terrible, the color looks phony. You have to keep moisturizing the hair or the luster will be gone. Never strip your hair.

I think your bigger problem is that giant green blemish on your face.

The longer the hair, the stronger the spirit.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

:thumbs: Some guys like women with short hair, not being ghey, I don't know any. Nessa, if you strip the hair it will get brittle and I think your hair looks perfect as is.

As what Mike Chadway says in "The Ugly Truth," men like women with long hair so they have something to grab.

Perhaps you want to try the dyeing yourself, Nessa. There are many tips online like this one. Here's another.

I have never dyed my hair though and I don't think I ever will. I like my black hair plus I don't want to risk getting exposed to harsh chemicals that most dyes are made of.

Enjoy! ;)

i have really long thick hair (to my waist) i had that done to mine once....it is now back to its normal dark brown after a few years but the problem i found when i had it all done at once is it left it feeling un natural....not soft like it was. my hair is once again healthy but maybe you should think of a few high lites or something until u decide if u really want to go to that color?

just my opinion

That's what I heard from a friend who had it done, she didn't like it either.

That's a tough one Nessa - your hair is so long and healthy, messing it up would be a real pain, so I can understand wanting to do it professionally. I have been researching DIY dye not from a drugstore and came across chromasilk, so I will be trying that next. One thing I keep reading is not to use permanent dye for many reasons. of course big face palm on that one for me.

Perhaps you want to try the dyeing yourself, Nessa. There are many tips online like this one. Here's another.

some of those tips I had never heard of (especially rinsing with cold or tepid water)! thanks for the links.

oh and this part, i dont totally understand (although I am not a professional) but wouldn't highlighting over a course of 6 months create multiple colors of hair? I mean the end goal is to create a lighter base to all over dye.. but the problem is a line of demarkation from previous permanent dye, right?

i say - don't change the entire 'scheme' - but -

color streak it, instead.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
