http://www.tahtonka.com/food.html - Good article on effects of western diet on natives.

I'm the kind that loves gardening and growing whatever fruit/veg/herb I can myself in our backyard, it's a hobby, a passion and I guess something that I got from my green thumbed dad. I like to know exactly what I put into my body and what went into production of that food, and I definetely know how it affects how I feel every day. I am completely against mass produced processed junk food that people tend to eat in this country and it really baffles my mind to see what people here eat and how completely ignorant they are about the effects on their bodies and minds. I know not everyone is able to grow their own food and I've learned that it's nearly impossible to find fresh produce in certain neighborhoods and people are "forced" to survive on packaged junk... but this to me should be a far more important issue than socializing health care, get people educated about food and better food choices, start urban farming projects so people can learn how to grow their own food etc. Not let the masses eat junk and expect those who pay taxes to pay for health care costs directly related to diseases caused by what people are eating...

Why is bad food so cheap? That's what I'd like to know.

Because companies mass produce it, found sick ways and dirty ingredients to extend the shelf life, make it taste good with fat, salt and sugar so that dumb shmucks can stuff themselves with it, get addicted to it and get sick.

Lets have some balance....list the #1 killer for the top 20 countries who's immigrants have been approved visa's to the US.

yes, The #1 killer in Europe too is CVD, my point is that causes of CVD are preventable, meaning education personal responsibility needs to be stressed, not throwing tax money at an attempt to cure stupidity.

Wrong on so many levels :ranting:

If you can get beyond the soundbite of "personal responsibility" you will realize that you took what I wrote out of context.

You are one person, you have no right to impose your beliefs of what constitutes appropriate responsibility onto the rest of society. Noone does.

I don't understand how people can't see that if you live in society, paying for the bad choices made by other people is a given. You get benefits from living in a society, you have responsibilties for living in a society. You can determine how that society is run, giving the individual more, or less freedom, but that does not change the fact that those who make bad choices affect those who make good choices regardless.

I agree. But when people make dumb decisions: knowingly eating food that makes them sick, breeding kids they can't afford, opting out of education because of laziness etc. and other people have to foot the bill for their stupidity through higher taxes it is wrong.

As I have said many many times before, what folks here classify as freedom, as 'the government ain't telling me what to do', most abroad that reside in first world countries consider lunacy and utter stupidity. Who is right, who is wrong, who knows really. However, looking at the quality of life studies, looking at where other professionals from first world countries want to migrate to, looking at who is internationally recognized and who is not, says a lot does it not?

Exercise is a big component as well but you can eat foods without additives and still drop death from CVD. Chinese mummies from a long time ago reveal some have died from CVD. If all natural foods were the key people in poor countries would live longer than those in the affluent nations. The people in the developing world died from causes earlier in life prior the the onset of diseases which kill off the old folks in richer countries. In any case, heart, lung disease and stroke were leading causes meaning humans have a built in expiration date regardless of significant environmental factors.

Causes of death in developing countries Number of deaths Causes of death in developed countries Number of deaths

HIV-AIDS 2,678,000 Ischaemic heart disease 3,512,000

Lower respiratory infections 2,643,000 Cerebrovascular disease 3,346,000

Ischaemic heart disease 2,484,000 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 1,829,000

Diarrhea 1,793,000 Lower respiratory infections 1,180,000

Cerebrovascular disease 1,381,000 Lung cancer 938,000

Childhood diseases 1,217,000 Car accident 669,000

Malaria 1,103,000 Stomach cancer 657,000

Tuberculosis 1,021,000 Hypertensive heart disease 635,000

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 748,000 Tuberculosis 571,000

Measles 674,000 Suicide 499,000

You will pay for the fat and lazy folks especially under a health reform so enjoy watching them kill themselves on your dime. We'll ensure they live longer and require more healthcare in their old age.
