My husband and I own a home in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We have sold it and the deal closes on March 25, 2010. We have purchased a new home in Niagara Falls, NY and the deal also closes on March 25th. We are just finding out that it may take up to 48 hours to transfer the proceeds from the sale of our Canadian home to our US bank account. Does anyone know how we can transfer $125,000 USD from Canada to the US instantly, so our house deal will close on time?

Thanks.

not saure, but you could contact customhouse.com and see what they have to say, they do offer a wire service that is supposedly instant!! But I have never used that service. and with it being a large sum of $$$$, may have a few more obstacles!! Doesnt hurt to phone and ask.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Cndwife-Congrats about getting a new home in Niagara Falls, NY! It's a great area to live in! Lucky you, you'll be close to the Falls too!

Hmm...I have no idea about the money situation...(sorry, I don't even have that much money to transfer!)

But maybe you can transfer it "a little bit at a time"......"the old fashioned way"....bring it across the border yourself!

Let's see....$125,000...USD....at $9999.99 USD per trip....

About 13 trips (130 minutes..at 10 minutes per trip between Niagara Falls ON and Niagara Falls NYS) driving back and forth across the border should do the trick..... Just kidding.....(lol...I can't think of anything else...)

Nevertheless, enjoy your new home and good luck on your "short distance" immigration journey.....:)

That was funny. No Need to limit on 9999.99. At All.

Ever.

Perhaps you are muddled about the 'declaration' amount - ie - anything over 10K MUST be declared at the border (cash, financial instrument, bank cheque). There is no other 'ding' on the person carrying it in.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Darnell-Yes..The $9999.99 was the declaration amount under 10k.....

That's why I menioned such....

So it boils down to....Do you want to declare over $125,000 at once and be pulled over....Or do the $9999.99 over 13 trips...no questions asked...

I think the OP mentioned before that they had a NEXUS card...

And they only live 10 minutes away from each other!

Can go through the fast lanes...13 times....lol....no questions asked.....under 10K....lol...

Just an idea....;)

cdnwife - here's a thought - see if it is doable for you...

have the buyer make out the cheque (in us funds) to the name of the SELLER . Then get the cheque from the Buyer, walk it across the border, give it to the seller.

cndwife, I would do what Flames mentioned and contact customhouse, as he said, they will want extra information from you. First of all I would contact your bank in Canada though - there is no reason why your own bank can't issue a wire transfer.

Good luck and congratulations on the house.

I can offer two options which I tried in the past and both of them are instant transfers.

1.wire transfer via ur cdn bank or custom house

2.Money gram via canadian post office (no waiting time at all)

good luck

Thanks for the input. I'll try the customshouse approach as we have already contacted our banks...TD Canada Trust this side and HSBC on the US side...both major banks to be sure...and they aren't giving us much hope in an instant transfer. My concern here is the timeline...not so much the transfer of money across the border. My husband is a USC and it's his house too, therefore his money.

Just thought I would update this thread with what we ended up doing, incase anyone runs into the same problem. Couple days before we closed on our house(s) we wire transferred $40,000 US from cnd account into our US bank account it only took 24 hours. The day of closing we prayed real hard and asked the lawyers to be as fast on the Cnd side as possible and they were! We had our lawyer deposit our funds directly into our cnd account and we withdrew $90,000 in US cash (we let the bank know in advance to have it ready.0 My husband declared the funds leaving Cnd and again entering the US...the US delayed him 1 1/2 hours because they didn't know how to fill out the forms!! Anyways...we did get to the bank and did close on time...so happy ending after all the stress!!
