When looking over the rules, I noticed that if I am in Vietnam for 6 months I would get the police clearance locally, and then on another website it sounds like you need a criminal background that dates back years. There are different levels of police background checks, are they mainly wanting to make sure I have no outstanding warrants, or wanting to know of my entire past record? I will be moving probably the end of this month maybe early next month, so I need to know what I really need to get before I go. Does this report need to be notarized? Can I go to the local Sheriff’s office and just have them give me one? Thanks ahead of time for the help. Jerome

I believe police clearance is only for your Wife, not for you. If she living in 2 different place she needs to get both place for police chearance. It take atleast 1 month to get police clearance, and it will value for 6 months from the day your recieve.

Thanks for the link Mark.

For a work permit in Vietnam I will need the background check. I just don't know what type of one I need to get, it might very well be over 6 months before I actually get a job, and if that is the case then any police certificate I get done in the united states will be to old and I will have to get one from HCMC, at least that is what I have been reading on the different sites. I just want to make sure just incase. I don't want to leave home without the paper work since it will be so much harder to get once I am over there than if I had got it before I left. Thanks again for the replies. Jerome

This is the part I do not understand where they are not very clear.

Criminal record: If you have stayed in Vietnam for more than 6 months, you will have to get the criminal record that is issued by the Judiciary Department of the city where you are living. In case you are not in Vietnam or you have stayed here for less than 6 months, you will have to get that criminal record from your Authority Government. from website http://www.expat.vn/work-permit-in-vietnam

They do not say what level of a background check I must have, but with this part it sounds like it is not an extensive background check that would go back 10 years. If I live in Vietnam for more than 6 months they would do the background check there, so am I to assume that I can go and just get the lowest level background check from the local sheriff's office?

I don't know what they're looking for in regards to the US based check. You could probably get the basic one and be OK, but I don't know that for sure. I just came here and started teaching, then applied for the WP after I'd been here 6 months. You need to make sure you're registered in the house book where ever you are staying.

Thanks Mark, we figured I would get the basic one because after we get married then I take the Celta course it will be a few months down the road. Hopefully the celta and my business management ba will land me a decent teaching job. Jerome

I got my police clearance yesterday. The question I have is that it was not notorized or sealed. The local sheriff's office said that they do not do that. There is a telephone number for them to call if there are any questions, and it is not done on normal paper. It has the brown paper with the raised lettering for the local sheriff office's name and things. And since I did not have a notary there with me when I got it, I can not simply have it notorized. What do you guys think will this be acceptable? Jerome
