I applied for my citizenship early in Februaury and am wanting to travel home in early July. Looking at other timelines it appears there is a good possibility that I would take the oath in early July if all goes well. If this occurs I will not have time to obtain a US passport , even if it is expedited. Can I travel with my current passport and use my Permanent Resident card to return to the United States? Any advise regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You can Travel on your Current P.P up till the oath...

After the oath... you can only use your new usc P.P as you are then a USC..so don't try and use your Current P.P after oath..

Note....make sure somebody can check your post if your outside the us...as you do not want to miss any instructions the uscis has given you.

Best Wishes

Until you take your oath, you are considered a LPR. Therefore, traveling on a GC will work with your current passport, but make sure that you cover all your basis, and have someone take care of your mail for you. You may be lucky to receive your interview and oath letters prior to traveling, and I think expedited passports take around 3 weeks (not sure if it applies to passports for new citizens).

Not sure where in Texas you are, but there are Passport Agencies where you can make an appointment over the phone, go there and have the passport issued in a matter of hours (can take 24 hrs) if you are traveling within 14 days. They send people to the Chicago one all the time - they go to airport and then realize their passport expired.

Just bring the passport forms, 2 pictures, naturalization certificate and $160 (I'd bring a birth certificate as well just in case). Also bring an itinerary or ticket receipt.
