Do children of K1 visa applicants have to attend the interview at Montreal? I thought they didn't but according to the interview letter it says they do unless they get a waiver if they are under 14. I'm not sure if that applies to K1's or not. Anybody know for sure? I emailed Montreal as well but who knows when they'll get back to me. I'd like to book my hotel and transportation here soon and need to know.

Hi LilMermaid,

I don't know specifically for the k1 visas or about processes in Montreal (I've never been through such) but...

Immigration-wise, I see this as an advantage for your case that you have children too...So yeah, that will definitely work well in your favour here...Lol..think of it as..."I have to immigrate to the USA because my US Citizen child needs their Canadian mother around!...Reunite us. please!" Heck, I recommend you even bring your child to the interviews with you, along with any paperwork that you have associated with them (such as a birth certificate, birth abroad papers, etc.)...(though make sure they are well-behaved when you go)...as then they can see at the interview of the "real proof" of a child there!

I brought my son to my citizenship interview and oath ceremony (he was only 3 months old then)...He was well behaved.....And had no problems at all...

Think it did help my case (lol..the USCIS workers liked him...)...And I honestly think it will help in your case too....

Hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your journeys too.

Ant

My son was listed as 'beneficiaries' who needed to attend interview. He was 5 at the time. I emailed them to ask, and they confirmed that children under 14 years of age, did not have to attend the interview. So, I didn't bring him...

While there were many families there with their kids (for various reasons i'm sure), unless you have no one able to watch your children, they need not attend. This is of course, if they for some reason, have specifically asked for them to be there, in your interview letter.

The letter itself is a little confusing.

Good luck! :)

Well I emailed Montreal and finally got an answer. They replied "Yes, the children should attend the interview".

I stated their ages in the email and they are all under 14. I guess this trip just got a whole lot more expensive. They were still pretty vague in their answer of course. Not "NEED" or "HAVE TO" just a "SHOULD" attend. So at this point I'm not going to leave them behind and take a chance thats for sure.

My daughter was a little older (15 at time of interview) and had to attend I can tell you that they didn't ask her anything, I'm not really sure why they wasted my time having her there. It just meant she missed a couple days of school and I needed a larger hotel room.

Yeah I'm not worried about them asking the kids anything. I am just concerned with the cost at this point. I wanted to take the train but now its going to cost me 400 instead of 150 plus food expenses etc. The kids also tend to add to my stress in these situations...my girls are not ones to sit still for long and they will talk anybody's head off who gives them a chance. If the interviewer does ask them a question they'd best be in it for the long haul because those girls will spend forever telling them ALL about my fiance and how annoyed they are that he got to go to Florida while we had to wait here! I guess it could only help prove a relationship, not only with me but with them as well. Although one would think the fact that we lived together as a family in Canada for almost 3 years would suffice.

I do think the kids would enjoy the train though...for at least the first half hour!
