Estranged dad tells police he threw baby girl into river

When day breaks, rescue crews will search the Raritan River again Wednesday for a baby girl who may have been thrown off a bridge by her father.

The South Jersey man told police Tuesday night that after abducting his three-month-old daughter, he wrapped her in a sleeping bag and tossed her off the Driscoll Bridge in Sayreville, N.J.

Police stopped Shamshiddin Abdur-Raheem, 21, as he drove through Winslow Township, N.J. just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Abdur-Raheem, 21, was wanted for allegedly snatching his baby daughter from her grandmother's arms a few hours earlier, after punching the grandmother in her East Orange home.

Abdur-Raheem is the girl's biological father, but did not have custody, authorities said.

When police searched the Sicklerville man's red Dodge Caravan, they found no trace of the baby girl.

The Driscoll Bridge has turned into a bit of a magnet for chit like this. Tons of people jump off of it too. They've even put signs up now, telling people that if they want to talk to someone they can, don't kill yourself.

mycentraljersey.com is saying he has confessed to throwing her off the bridge, so scratch that...

Well of course we don't know what exactly set the guy off but Child support payments are a drag for those caught up in the legal system... after they fail to pay over an extended period.

It would be very easy to see how some low-life could seriously resent a child he has no connection to in the first place.

However, if I were placing bets, I would go with the ""I'll show that b_tch" reasoning as he is probably mad at the mom.

I saw this story on the news yesterday morning and almost cried. It's horrible. Poor baby. How can you guys even start a political/social debate with this story right now, have you no heart?

IMO, I dont effing care whether or not the mother would or would not have collected welfare because there's a more pressing issue here, a baby was just thrown off a bridge!
