My hubby arrived here last Feb 2, 2010 on an CR1 visa. Last feb 12, he received the green card right away but with A TYPO error on his first name, we then requested a new card with the right spelling of his name... We didnt go to the SSN office at all to fill for his SSN because in the DS230 ( I THINK), we put there that we want them to file the SSN for my husband...did we do the right thing?

Yes you did the right thing - however, for some reason they don't always send the SS Card and many folks end up having to go down the the SSA to apply for one in person. I'd give it a couple more weeks to come in, then go down and apply if it hasn't arrive by then.

THANKS! he's been here two weeks today, until when do I wait for it before applying in person? I just need him to have his SSN before I file my taxes on March 13.

ok, so even if we checked the SSN part on the DS230, we still have to go to the SSN office?

maybe.

maybe not.

The 'problem' is that even if you ticked the box on the DS-230 - you have no way to guarantee that it will be issued.

I suggest you go to an SSA office TODAY, bring passport and greencard.

Use the VISA NAME (printed in the passport) when he applies for a SSN, and the clerk should tell you WHETHER OR NOT he is 'found' in the SAVE database. Then, if he is 'found' - the application will go through.

Then, go back 2 days later to same SSA office, the clerk will GIVE you the SSN. (but not the printed card - that will show up in the mail).

Don't bother calling the national hotline - these folk are not only clueless, but don't have access to your husband's record.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

ok, another problem is the green card had a typo in his name, so we told by uscis that we need to send the card and they will replace it...

can he just show his passport and birth cert instead?

maybe.

maybe not.

IMO, he not need to 'show the greencard' at SSA.

He has I-551 stamp in his passport already, given at the POE.

That SHOULD be sufficient.

But - if any problem with SAVE database - you might want to have the clerk look him up under the mis-spelled name, as well, which would mean to bring in the GC to SSA office.

This stuff is so twisted - I hate it .. I should not have ever had to 'learn' all this cr@p - USCIS/DOS/SSA/CBP/DHS should make it all f*ckin seamless, and they DON'T !!!

Sometimes the SSN card comes as it is supposed to --if ya checked off the box on the DS-230----but sometimes it doesn't! After 10-14 business days, no SSN, simply head to the SSN office and ask about it! Best to download and fill out a form just in case your not in the system. Take ur passport with ya (with the visa in it) for proof that ur eligible for a SSN. Thats what I had to do. 1 week later it came in the mail

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We also checked the SS box in the DS-230 and even though we received my husband's green card in the mail 7 weeks after he arrived, the SS card was nowhere in sight. So, we ended up going to the SSA office to apply for a new one.

Keep in mind that the SSA will not issue a SSN unless all info has been entered in the system by the USCIS.
