Hullo kev_n_jena -

my apologies - I don't wish to hijaak the OPs thread - but

I was clear, I thought - when I mentioned 'different scope'.

I used 'different scope' as a label, on purpose.

Most K-1s QUALIFY for a SSN prior to marriage.

MANY actually apply and receive a SSN prior to marriage.

Yer lass got HER SSN after marriage - indeed even after the GreenCard was in hand.

It wasn't that 'something had changed', not at all. You two decided to 'do something else'.

Which made 'it' ----- 'different scope'.

Charlie - my apologies for the thread drift and hijaak..

OK, to me it seems we are still on topic here.

Is there an advantage or disadvantage to getting the SS card after marriage or even after getting the GC?

I liked the fact that we only had to go to the SS office one time and didn't have to follow up to have the card changed by mail or in person.

My wife had no plans to work the first year so we didn't see a downside.

I understand if you are going to file taxes you need to get your SS card. My wife got hers just in time for me to claim her on 2007 taxes.

Not really and advantage/disadvantage situation - if you never need the SS# then wait and get the card after the PR/Green Card arrives and you will have only gone once.

To me - from what I've seen - some folks give themselves a disadvantage when they find getting the card in their married name irresistible - whether we like it or not, or if it's even correct or not, trying to do this sometimes can lead to delays and frustration.

The easiest path is to apply for the card - in the maiden name - as soon as possible, then later - once the dust settles - go back and change the name and have the "Not Valid For Work Without DHS Authorization" annotation removed and you're done.

IF you need (in 2010) to 'add your spouse' to your bank accounts - MOST banks will ask to see a SSN.

IF yer foreign spouse wants to 'trade stock' in his/her name - ya needs a SSN.

IF yer foreign spouse is applying for finanical aid at a UNI, then ya need something - usually a SSN .

IF yer foreign spouse wants to get a drivers license in 20+ of the states that require a SSN, then ya need a SSN.

IF yer foreign fiancee requires a SSN to obtain a valid marriage license, well,,,

IMO, it's a disadvantage to 'get a SSN' after GC arrives. Many people do not get one during the 'K-1 window' that's available to them. I'll never understand 'why', either.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Thanks for your reply. I understand now. In our situation, she didn't need a SS card until tax time (April 15th). The reason we waited was to avoid mutiple contacts with the SS system. For us it worked. For most I guess it won't.

She used her passport as ID for the marriage license.

She got a state ID with her passport and marriage license, they wouldn't even look at the GC. (they acted like it was poison) LOL

I think we're still on topic here
