You should wait about 2 weeks after her POE - Time enough for her info to get into the SS computer system. Just bring her passport when you go - No State ID required. There is a form you can fill out ahead of time and bring with you (Just google it).

I say -

13 days after POE date, to 74 days after POE date.

IF before or after that time-span, is big problem.

Before - She's not in SAVE database yet.

After - She doesn't qualify anymore, until she has EAD card after AOS submittal.

SSA offices are twisted, many workers not understand what to do for K-1 visa holder.

If is any problem, if the application is not accepted - STOP.

Talk to a supervisor, mention 'K-1 visa and SAVE database' in same sentence - ask supervisor to LOOK UP the K-1 visa holder, in the name as printed in the VISA.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Are you a K1 visa holder? If so, I will share what we did. We got married a month after I got her in the States. 2 days after our wedding we went to the SSA office to file for my ss# under my married name. We did everything before my I-94 will expire. At first they denied me to get a ss# number because they said, I have to wait for my residency card which is not an uncommon reason at the SSA office because some employees doesn't know that we could apply for a ss# without having a residency card yet. I was granted the next day we went back along with the print-outs stating that I could apply for my ss#. Got my card on the mail after a week.

With the state ID, it was a lot easier for me. All they've wanted was my passport, BC and resident address ( with her name on it ). I was given a one year validity state ID because I do not have my resident card yet but I was told to come back as soon as I will get my resident card and they will issue a 4 years state card which I have right now.

Should you wait? No, I wouldn't - I'd apply as soon as I could - in the maiden name - then later on (like after the PR/Green Card is approved), I'd then go back and get it in the married name and also have the "Not for Work without DHS Authorization" annotation removed.

Have things changed with SS process since 2008? My wife came on K1 in July 2007 and didn't apply for SS until Feb. 2008. Everything was fine with it back then. She got it in her married name so we wouldn't have to mess with it again.

It sounds / smells like she applied after having greencard or ead in hand, yes? Different scope, totally, for SSA.

No, not wait at all.

Follow what I wrote earlier - and get the SSN in her VISA name.

Once she has the physical card in hand, is MUCH EASIER to get it changed to MARRIED name.

Remember (or perhaps you should learn on yer own? ) - - -

the SSA staff are braindead, moronish folk - that first-line employee across the counter

MORE LIKELY THAN NOT will not have been trained on the proper procedures for

handling a K-1 applicant, much less understand what to do about lookups in the SAVE database.

Good Luck ! Let us know which path you decided on, and please come back to report any pain and suffering along the way? :D

"It sounds / smells like she applied after having greencard or ead in hand, yes? Different scope, totally, for SSA."

What do you mean by "Different scope, totally, for SSA."? You are required to get a SS card before getting a GC now?

BTW, yes my wife applied for her SS card after getting her GC in 2008.

I'm not suggesting anyone follow the order my wife did. I just wondered if things had changed since she went through the process.

And lastly, the agent at the SS office we went to was very knowledgeable and actually spelled my wife's name correctly, unlike the person who printed her GC.

Hullo kev_n_jena -

my apologies - I don't wish to hijaak the OPs thread - but

I was clear, I thought - when I mentioned 'different scope'.

I used 'different scope' as a label, on purpose.

Most K-1s QUALIFY for a SSN prior to marriage.

MANY actually apply and receive a SSN prior to marriage.

Yer lass got HER SSN after marriage - indeed even after the GreenCard was in hand.

It wasn't that 'something had changed', not at all. You two decided to 'do something else'.

Which made 'it' ----- 'different scope'.

Charlie - my apologies for the thread drift and hijaak..
