bingo. the use of high sulfur shanxxi coal is the culprit, plain and simple. been there and seen it myself. not a fish in the river but the mud puppies, nad damned few of them. the old guys wading in the river casting nets can tell you what it was like 30 years ago, before the recent coal powered economic boom. nuf said.

I look at it from the outside and see a three-fold problem-- water they are irrigating with, rainfall, and fertilizer. I've heard how much the rivers have deteriorated.. it's amazing how wealthy China was in environmental gifts and yet how destroyed it's becoming/has become in such a short time relative to their history. My aunt's family is from there and they don't even recognize the place now.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Being a kid in one of the rural barangays in Bukidnon was so much fun. There were cows, carabaos, and goats. There were corn fields and sugarcane plantations. It was easy to enjoy sugarcane although it was difficult to rip it apart. Isn't it lovely to just spot a growing sugarcane along the road and it tempts you with its sweet look that seem to say, "Come pull me and suck me out"? That was how it was.

You should really think carefully what you write. Some of are simply incapable of getting our minds out of the gutter.

Looks like your mind is a little shattered. I thought you are the only existing "principle spell chick boy" and more, darlin'.

I'll remember your advice. :P

eh - i've 2 acres in town, a 'micro-garden' - but i still stay organic - use aged horse manure on it, 3 times/year, make my own compost also.

China could 'go big' with compost and manure, you betcha. There are pockets around where 'going organic' is actually working, and the farmers are getting higher prices.

as for 'bioremediation' of the toxic places - eh... time for a few years of 'good algae' - spirulina rocks. and rocks well.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Do you have a few pics of your garden, Darnelle? Have you tried cow manure?

Has anyone here grown herbs in pots? How do herbs grow best in pots? It is such a waste to keep buying a bunch of parsley, basil, or more when I need a very little amount of them.

I used to like my herb , and my pot. But that was years ago in college. I don't indulge in controlled substances any longer
