Question about passport

In packet four it states that my fiancé must have a passport that is valid for at least eight months past the date of issuance.

The date the passport was issued was on October 17, 2005

The date the passport will expire is on October 17, 2010

The passport will expire in seven months!

I am thinking we are OK because the statement in packet four references the date of issuance (“have a passport that is valid for at least eight months past the date of issuance.”)

We are nervous though because our interview is on March 4th and we do not have enough time to renew her passport.

Anyone have some insight on this?

Thanks, Robert and Mai

The 'date of issuance' (the way I read it) is referring to the issuance of the visa (not when the passport was issued). If that helps.

Agreed. ALL passports (except temporary ones if you've lost it while travelling) have an expiry date over 8 months from when the passport was issued.

In this case, they are referring to the visa's issuance date. So if you are issued the visa on 1 March 2010, your passport must be valid until 1 November 2010 (which yours isn't but if it's close they MIGHT let it slide).

I honestly don't know what they do if your passport hasn't got the right validity length. I'm sure it's happened before though so don't stress too much (easier said than done i know :P).

Best of luck to you :D

Thanks for the quick reply...well there is not much we can do now. With the Tet holiday it is near impossible to get anything done. We are trying not to stress out but we can not help but be worried that we will be denied a pink again. We are just wishing that we catch a lucky break and that no one make an issue of this....Robert and Mai

They may give you an option of getting the passport renewed and then issuing you the visa - or they may issue the visa but it won't be valid for the usual 6 months as it cannot be valid for longer than the passport, so the visa would also expire on the same date as the passport.

Moving this to US Embassy and Consulate Discussion Forum - even though the applicant is a K-1, the question would probably be of interest to anyone expecting a visa from one of the US Consulates. Perhaps there has been someone in the same situation who can answer what happened in their case and at what Consulate their visa was issued?

She will still have time to go to the governement office before the interview and after the holiday to get it renewed... a little coffee money should get it expedited to avoid any issues with the visa...
