Phill received his green card and his EAD in the mail on September 2nd! Now all we need to do is get over to the social security office to get his updated card and then he can get a job! He's so excited! I'm now thinking how weird it's going to be to not worry about paperwork for two years. lol

WOOHOO!!!! I got two emails from USCIS today!! One of them confirmed that they have approved Phill for permanent residence and the other confirmed that they had ordered the card production and to expect it in the mail within 30 days! Holy crow!! That didn't take near as long as I'd feared!! Oh and to update you all---we never saw a civil surgeon. Just sent in the DS-3025.

:wow:

That's something we (and by "we," I mean "I") was a bit worried about. But my husband got all his jabs done at the medical exam in London, and his DS-3025 is complete, so you have just encouraged me not to bother with the civil surgeon. He's far away and costs $25 anyway!

Married yesterday and hoping to send AOS docs off by Tuesday :)

We also got married September 10th :) Just waiting for our marriage certificate to come back so we can send off our AOS package!

Really, you need to go back to SS and change the card before you can work? I assumed the green card would be plenty to work... but if this is the case I'm glad I'm finding out now rather than on the other half's first day of work!

I don't think you actually need to, I think that it is a good idea to because it will confuse anyone who sees it if it says work only allowed with authorization.

Our interview is on October 12th! I am getting all of our stuff together to bring. Hopefully all goes well!

On the SS card question. I have never, ever had to show my card. I don't think I even know where it is. I've had the number memorized forever and just fill in any forms needing the number without producing a card. If it's a name change, yes eventually you will want all your records to be correct, so it's wise to change your name with them at your earliest convience. If you contribute as Mary Jones to an account named Mary Smith, it might get messy when you get in your 60's and want to collect a monthly social security check.

You should be able to work by giving your SSN (or filling out a paper) and showing your green card. Believe it or not, illegals work giving SSNs that are not theirs or even have similar names. Sometimes wages are reported to the same SSN by 30 different workers. And they file income tax on those numbers. And nobody notices. Social Security and the IRS don't check up on minor things like that.

We also got married September 10th :) Just waiting for our marriage certificate to come back so we can send off our AOS package!

Great thing (only great thing) about Indianapolis is that we got our marriage cert the same day that we got married. Just took the paperwork back to the Clerk and they did it on the spot.

Sending AOS this week, fingers crossed!

As I'm sure you've read, apparently you don't have to go and get an updated SS card. I was told that we had to though, so that's why we did. Which really wasn't a problem for us because we were going to be in the city for shopping anyway, and we were in and out of there within 10 minutes. At least his new SS card will be "normal" and not say that he has to have DHS authorization to work (which I'm sure could confuse some employers).
