not sure if i should be offended by this ..lol and by the way I just posted some links I found.. i never really gave my opinion...

and I am not trying to excuse the behavior.. I am just trying to point out that things were not that much better in the past..

here is my opinion.. it really is horrible that a 11 year old had a child.... but what do you want her parents to do now? do you want them to shun her or something??

What I want is simple, the parents should be investigated for negligence. If it's found to be true, have both kids taken away from them; with the parents punished by the law.

Why should the rest of society, including this child, have to literally pay for the parent's bad choices?

so if that happened who would take care of the child and her baby?

i think a lot of people have already said that you can't watch your child 24/7 unless you lock them in their room...

and wouldn't society have to pay for the child and her baby if you took them away??

You can. It's VERY difficult, and there can be NO luxuries, no going through the drive through when you are too tired to cook, no throwing out leftovers, no junk food of any kind, but it is possible. But that does not count the TP, shampoo, freezer bags etc.

I'm referring to the amount of $300, not $265. And no WIC or free lunches included. But I have to eat those disgusting Banquet frozen lunches at school because they only cost $1 a meal. The spaghetti isn't bad.

I would still like to know what you can feed 2 adults and a child for this amount. What about meat? Milk? Juice? Vegetables?

Hence, why if most parents did their job, idiocy like this is much less likely to occur. Even at 16, I would fear having to come home to tell my dad I got a girl pregnant.

As mentioned by other posters, the reality is that there are teenagers in 2010 that are looking forward towards having a baby. Spare me this ####### about the past, as we are not living in the past. The level of education teenagers have access to in 2010 is unprecedented. The obvious failure here is with parents and the change in attitude towards their kids. For example, my parents never put me on some sort of pedestal, having adults wait 5 minutes behind me so I could decide (at 10) what I wanted to order. I was a child and treated as such, therefore, they ordered for me. It taught me a totally different lesson to what is taught to those in the latest gen.

I don't buy the "you can't watch your child 24/7", certainly not with a 11 year old. Like many others, my folks sure as hell kept tabs on me and had no mobiles, internet, gps and so on to do so.

Because society pays all the time for people's bad choices BY that is one of the responsibilities of living in a society where one is free to make choices.

Btw, what you want would be more costly and have worse consequences for the children in the long run if one looks at the statistical probability of a child remaining with its parents and turning out ok as an adult versus ones that are removed from their family UNLESS there is abuse within the family.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

so did your parents follow you around at all times then or something??

and for the record you are the one that is constantly bringing up the past saying how it was so much better back then then it is now...

My parents sure as heck knew what I was doing up until the age of 18. As long as I was under 18 and living in their house, I knew who ruled the roost. Hence why no Columbine equivalents came or come out of my type of upbringing. Locking the door and telling my parents to stay out of my room, would have been the funniest thing I could have told my old man.

There are a lot of things we as a society can do and still ensure freedom. For starters, holding parents accountable for their actions or lack of. Furthermore, punishing parents who are negligent, resulting in their children breaching the law.

I would think that an 11 year old 5th/6th grader giving birth to a child is grounds for abuse or negligence. No?

my parents didn't know where we were at all times.. and they weren't terribly strict but we never got ourselves into trouble...

I think even parents that do their very best to raise their children right can still have a kid that has problems

As I said, tell me how many columbine types come from disciplined backgrounds? I am not talking about concentration camp style parenting but about a well rounded and disciplined household, where the parents are actively involved in a child's life. Every kid I knew who grew up in such a household, is now highly successful and a well rounded individual. Whereas, one guess what happened to those whose parents let them do whatever they wanted.

To suggest that all parents mean and do well for their kids is laughable and not in touch with reality; certainly not in America.
