Girl, 11, Gives Birth to Baby Boy

There was a story this weekend in the St. Pete Times about a Guatemalan guy who knocked up an 11 year old girl who gave birth at 12. Neither he nor her parents thought that there was anything wrong with that. He's apparently getting a new trial - after having been convicted - because he only speaks some tribal language - Mam, I think it was called - and doesn't even understand Spanish. It's a fcuked up world - quite literally...
 I can remember a 2001 BBC report of an English 12-year-old who had given birth (to a son)--her mum was 26 years old!

thought this was interesting...

according to this teen birth rates were the highest in the 1950's (age 15 to 19)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7120501208.html

also according to this the birth rate between 10-to-14-year-old girls has continued to fall.. they also say that the rate between 15 to 19 year olds had been decreasing since the 1950's but the last few years it has increased by a few percent

I'm not blaming it on anyone, BY. $hit happens - yes there are bad parents, but unlike you I have no interest in using news headlines as some arbitrary barometer of social degeneration.

You can take your outrage and stick it up your tight arsehole.

Mate, don't make me laugh. You need to get over this attitude you have towards anyone discussing such stories.

At the end of the day, regardless of your own warped opinion and silly beliefs, this is not media hype and it's certainly not me being some sort of drama queen - it's about accepting reality.

The parents should be investigated for child neglect and abuse. It is conceivable that a close relative or boyfriend of the mother impregnated this child. Where is the local Child Protective Services agency? The mother is 100% to blame for this.

This sums it all up.

"My daughter and (her) baby are fine, and the baby is absolutely beautiful," said the mother of the 11-year-old girl.

You can't be around your kids at all times. How many of us snuck a cigarette in when we were in high school? People can have sex just about anywhere. As for teen pregnancy? It's always been around. It's not a new thing. It's just that in today's world, we hear about it more. My wife was born in the 50's and one of her classmates got pregnant at age 14.

What surprises me is that strong backlash against teaching about birth control down south. There were large protests against building a planned parenthood clinic here. Nevermind that Houston leads the country in teen births. Over 50% of births in Texas are paid for by Medicaid.

As for me? I learned about the birds and the bees when I was about 2 years old. I saw a pregnant woman and asked my mom why her stomach was like that. (well, when two people decide to have a child, the woman becomes pregnant). Well how does the baby get in there?.......thus the conversation started.

I actually think that kids are too coddled these days. They don't get the responsibility to go bike riding or play down at the park. They don't walk places. There is always a parent around. And kids have a cell phone on them at all times. They never get to learn how to take control of situations themselves.

Thanks for the historical perspective Marilyn. It will go entirely unnoticed by the blowhards of course, but some of us do appreciate the factual context of a debate.

OK BY - in all you've said here, how exactly can you claim to be "accepting" reality.

The reality here is that this has happened, the media likes stories like because people like to watch them, click their tongues at how $hitty society has become and shake their fists at the world through their TV.

The reality is that the taxpayer has to pay for this child, regardless of whether anyone agrees with it or not.

So how, exactly, are you "accepting reality"?

Not really. My mother could be saying something like this even if she'd be up the wall about her daughter - she never had one, actually - getting knocked up at such a young age. But once that would happen, my mom would be supportive of her own child and the newborn. No questions asked.

yes and I did say that it has increased in the last few years

what about what I mentioned earlier that teen birth rates were the highest back in the 1950's

in 1957 96 teen girls out of 1000 gave birth

in 2006 41 teen girls out of 1000 gave birth

Another fail! That is not what is being discussed in this thread. Also not surprising that Marilyn has gone off on some sort of illogical direction.

The issue here, as highlighted above, is the response of the parent of the 11 year old child. Not to mention the fact that an 11 year old child is having a child.

I wouldn't get pregnant if I ever started having sex at eleven. I had period at 17-jk. Anyway, this is crazy. The parents should know their children activity. Thank God I read this article. I'll definitely watch my daughter until she is old enough to know how to avoid serious consequences.

Contrary to Pike's (GH) belief of 2010 being no different to previous decades, look at the attitude of this 11 year old's parent. She speaks like her 26 year old financially stable married daughter, has given birth to her first child.

Screw anonymity, her faux adult parents don't deserve it. I would like to know how they and their 11 year old is going to pay for this baby. It better not be our taxes.

you did bring it up

back in the day teen pregnancies were shoved under the rug.. a lot of the pregnant girls were forced to get married or they were shipped away until they gave birth...

You do realize the average age of first marriage was way younger back then. Not to mention the cost of raising a child was way lower.

It's all about choice right? As long as an 11 year old child made the choice, all is good. So where is my choice and the rest of societies choice when it comes to paying for (supporting) this child? Or are you going to pull Steven economics and expect me to believe that an 11 year old is going to financially take care of this child herself? Damn shame she is five years away from being able to get her drivers license. Seven years away from being an adult, able to legally sign a contract. Ten years away from being able to obtain her first credit card.

It's called context. I was talking about society and a parent's response to such things in general.

Plus today birth control is readily available. What would be the teen birth rate today if contraception was like it was in the 50's? And we also need to factor in the abortion rate. Abortion was not an option for a 50's teen. How would those figures look now?
