Glad to hear all went well and you are now together at least for the weekend. Good luck to your husband tomorrow at his interview!

Thanks! He got back to the hotel safely and I got back to Texas just fine too. He emailed me though and said a guest at the hotel told him that he was walking back from the consulate to the hotel and a couple of blocks from the hotel some people got out of a car and held him up and took all of his money.... Just what he didn't need to hear... I emailed and told him that HE wouldn't be walking ANYWHERE so he should be fine and that Jilly and Danny walked from the Consulate to the hotel and they were just fine. So I don't know if it was true or maybe the guy was just hoping for some money?? I'll ask him more when I talk or message with him.

Czmjacq, thanks so much for the update. That is scary about the supposed stick up!I wonder what the deal was. Do people feel safe in the van? Is it pretty available? I hope things go well at the interview and en route. Thanks for sharing!

Hello everyone!!!

My husband and I just turned in out I-130 in Mexico City on Thursday and I was wondering how do I get a case number?? Can I just call the Embassy and ask if there is a case number yet....or does it need to be approved first? And if so...how do I find out if it was approved without having to wait for the letter in the mail?? Any insight is much appreciated!!

Thanks!

Hello Esperanza !..

The case number is assigned by Cd Juarez.

The order is:

1) File I-130

2) Mexico City approves or denies the application (they should send you a letter, in my case the send me an email... but also you can find out if it was approved by calling them,.. 3 or 4 days after you file the form).

3) If it was approved, Mexico City will send the information to Cd Juarez

4) Cd Juarez will send you a letter with the case number (and will ask you for "packet 3")

5) You send "packet 3" info to Cd Juarez

6) Cd Juarez send you a letter with appoinment date

7) interview in Cd Juarez

;) Good Luck

Well apparently the stick up was real... my husband said the guy said he was walking back to the hotel La Quinta from the Medical Clinic. I wouldn't walk anywhere there but I think Jilly said she and her husband walked back to the hotel from the consulate.

Bad news at the interview... I am American but also a naturalized Mexican and they told him that I could only have one citizenship -- and if I was Mexican I couldn't sponsor him for US VISA... he said they wanted to know if I was there so they could talk to me. And of course I wasn't since they specifically say no one will be allowed into the Consulate except the one with the interview. They may have approved him if I was there, to explain that I had dual citizenship and at no time was I told I couldn't have both citizenships---- the worse part is when I sent my I-130 application in they sent it back and said I needed to send a copy of my FM-3 -- I called and said I didn't have one since I was a Naturalized Citizen and they said just to send a copy of that, so I did. So they KNEW I was a Naturalized Mexican when this whole process started and if that wasn't going to work, then they should have told us then.

Anyway, I'm going to call the $1.25 number tomorrow and see what's up... but for now he isn't approved. We weren't planning for him to come to the US to live until next July so we have plenty of time, it's just a big pain!!

Oh well, if it's not meant to be I guess I'll just have to fly to Cozumel more frequently to visit... not a bad deal. And we only planned on staying in the US until for about 4 years for my daughter to go to high school there and once she was in college, we would move back to Cozumel.

sorry czmjacq they are being jerks. Here's what their own policy says:

http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_778.html

you would have to have taken Mexican citizenship with the intention of relinquishing American. Clearly, you haven't. That's probably what they want to clear up but it's a really dumb thing to make someone go to CJ for.

May 9, 2010 - I emailed them using the inquiry form asking for my case number

May 17, 2010 - received case number and link to Packet 3 by email

May 18, 2010 - sent Packet 3 to Ciudad Juarez

May 28, 2010 - called Ciudad Juarez to see if we had an appointment yet, they said wait 6-8 weeks :(

May 30, 2010 - I return to the US

June 8, 2010 - called and found out appointment date

June 16, 2010 - received Packet 4

July 6, 2010 - interview - Approved!

July 7, 2010 - pick up visa at DHL and POE to activate

Hey Czmjacq--

I'm sorry likewise that they didn't let you know earlier!! I hope you can clear everything up while your husband is there--to have to make another trip back to CDJ just doesn't seem fair, considering that they knew you were a naturalized citizen a while ago.

As for the stick-up, yikes...Be careful, everyone! Regarding money matters, does anyone know if you have to use a credit/debit card to pay certain fees? I feel like I read that before, but I'm not sure.

And also, this is a minor update, but I got an email from USCIS Monterrey today saying that they back-date everything there by 3 days and that my petition is still pending, but they'd let me know by email (woo-hoo!) once they process it.

Good luck, tomorrow, Czymjacq!

Hi Lia

Wow .. never knew it and your right I would never give up my American citizenship.... Great link ...obvious I was not aware of any of this but when I read through it, it appears they assume you don't want to give up your American Citizenship unless you tell them otherwise.... but guess they needed to hear it from me... I sent them an email about everything so I'll see what they say.

Thanks... my husband paid with Bank of America US Credit Card at the medical clinic. I think Lia's hubby paid the consulate fees with a US debit card because she mentioned it was $404... So seems like either should work and BTW they have USD pricing at the clinic but they charged the CC in pesos.

Czmjacq..

Im sorry that the interview didnt go well..but I hope they give you a chance to explain about your dual citizenship.

Im also mexican and american.. but Im mexican by birth and american by naturalization..I hope it wont be a problem.. :S

It is unfair that they let you do all the process (and pay all the fees) if they knew since the beginning that wont be approved !!

Good luck and keep us posted what they tell you by phone. Thank you so much.

Wow, that's just crazy, czmjacq. I really hope it all just works its way out. It's very coincidental. Yesterday, I went to the Foreign Relations office to ask about getting my Mexican naturalization. I have an FM2 right now, and I pay about $3000 pesos every year to renew it. Since we'll be staying another 3 years minimum, I was looking to try to avoid that and found out I am eligible for naturalization. However, now I'm not sure if I want it anymore.

That is what really is upsetting...they knew all of this from the time I sent in the I-130 because they specifically contacted me asking for a copy of my FM3 and I told them I didn't have one since I was naturalized MX and they said OK, just send that.

Are you going to the interview with your husband? You may want to stick close by if you are, like Jilly did, just in case they need to ask you. But since yours is the other way around, it doesn't sound like they will, but who really knows!!

I emailed them since the last time I called I was given wrong information and I don't think they are even there in CJ... It sounds like they are just reading stuff from a record. But I'll keep you posted.

Be careful... other than the guy on Friday that was robbed walking from the Medical Clinic back to the hotel (La Quinta), he said there was a woman who was crossing the street just in front of the hotel and someone in a car stopped and grabbed her purse off her arm and she feel into the street and got all scraped up and of course lost her purse with her money and ID. Then he said there was a maid that worked at the hotel crying saying she was robbed that morning on the way to work. So I don't know if the drug trafficking business has slowed down and these people are looking for other means to get money, but it seems like there are a lot of robberies lately so just be very careful. My husband didn't walk ANYWHERE.
