which POE

my fiance will be coming in a few weeks (on a k1), I am in california so does he have to have his port of entry in cali or can he come through jfk ?

The first US airport (or foreign CBP pre-clearance location which niether London locations are) landed in will be the POE - subsequent flights will be domestic flights (with no CBP clearance). If the first airport is JFK, that will be his POE.

Wide choice:
  • There are nonstop flights to LAX and SFO from LHR (United, Continental, ...) but not from LGW
  • Transit through Canada (Calgary, Vancouver, Dorval or Pearson--all of which have nonstop connexions to LHR, and also to LAX and SFO and all of which sport US-Customs/Immigration PFI's) which is "no-problem" (no visa required) for Limeys
  • He can also clear immigration (but not customs) at Dublin or Shannon--but these do not have nonstop connexions to LAX or SFO
  • lots of other US-soil POE's east of CA (some with nonstop connexions to LHR, others to LGW)

It's worth pointing out that there is no particular reason to torture your flight itinerary in order to PoE through JFK. The "EAD stamp" they hand out is useless to K-1 holders and has been since last March. K-1 holders need an EAD card or a green card in their hand in order to work. That stamp in only relevant to people holding work visas keyed to specific employers.

Actually, it is then quite useless as a whole--as the work visa can be gotten around by doing full-packet AOS and waiting-out EAD issuance. :P
