How about how they are both considered to be motivating speakers both for different ends? Obama's Berlin campaign speech near the victory column always struck me as odd. Can't recall another American candidate for president giving a speech overseas other than a sitting incumbent president.

Or that both were quite popular in Germany. Obama still gets some unreal approval numbers in Germany for some reason.

You haven't traveled much, have you.

Obama's appeal in Europe has a lot to do with the fact that George W. Bush was universally loathed over there

Well, how about not just giving a speech abroad, but more astoundingly, spending the entire campaign season out of the country, and out of touch with voters! Try William H. Seward of New York, a rival of Abraham Lincoln's for the 1860 Republican nomination:

In 1859, confident of gaining the presidential nomination and advised by his political ally and friend Thurlow Weed that he would be better off avoiding political gatherings where his words might be misinterpreted by one faction or another, Seward left the country for an eight-month tour of Europe.

When he left the US, he was the front runner and no one had ever heard of Abe Lincoln. He was touring all around Europe while Lincoln was campaigning throughout New England and the East coast. Seward returned in time for the Republican convention in Chicago, but by then Lincoln had amassed enough support to beat him (there were other serious rivals as well - Salmon Chase of Ohio in particular).

Another relevant example, more modern and perhaps a more relevant precedent to Obama's trip to Germany, is that of Humbert Humphrey in 1967.

In Germany, Humphrey indirectly earned fame during an April 1967 visit when some hippies, armed with what looked like a bomb, planned to cause trouble at the place Humphrey was to speak.

Humphrey was the VP at the time (in LBJ's Administration) and his visit to Germany was an official visit in that capacity. Nonetheless he was entering the campaign at that time for the 1968 election and indeed would become the Democratic nominee.

The Seward example is a little old for American poltics and he wasn't elected anyway.

Humphrey was a VP and traveled widely as a representative of the LBJ White House. Obama wasn't the front man for anyone except himself and his campaign.

Lived in Germany and probably been in more countries than you with traveling in 29 countries. The idea that Germans are more politically astute than Americans is ridiculous. The Germans are given to political extremes in the past and now. Giving a 90% approval to Obama now shows they may like his image but have little knowledge how poorly Obama's policies are received by the American people.

By the same token, PM Blair was more popular in the U.S. than the UK so you're telling me most Britons were wrong in their opinion of Blair.

I'm telling you exactly what I said, Dave. Not what you've decided to tell yourself.

Quiz time- does anyone know what this phrase means because Gene Hunt doesn't and neither do I?

Good thing your against torture of all forms (except your posts) because I doubt even the rack could straighten you out and persuade you to write coherent reponse. . .arrrghhh!

You haven't the foggiest notion of what you're talking concerning my background or politics in general. Posters like you need a warning label on their signature lest anyone take you seriously. Anyone can have an opinion but there should be some rationale behind it beyond parroting your parents' "Because I said so" mentality.

LOL so the conclusion I just got out of this thread is that both Hitler and Obama loved their countries.

My conclusion is that it is all a bunch of BS. There are plenty of real reasons to dislike Obama...his policies for one, or two or 253. His coincidental associations with Hitler, and probably some coincental similarities to Robert E. Lee, Thomas Jefferson, or Ronald Reagan, have nothing to sdo with my liking him or not. How many women Hitler or Obama's father knocked up would have nothing to do with either man and bear no connection.

Only a simple minded buffon would critizene Obama for thissilly horsesqueeze when there is so much real and legitimate reason to take issue with him. There is no need for desaparation attempts. Really, Shooter, you are more clever than that. Leave this silly stuff to the liberals.

For that matter I will note also the liberals play along with this since it is much better for them than to discuss real issues. They love when the critics get off onto silly tangents. Stop feeding them and making life easy for them, Shooter.

Let's discuss, instead (and just for example) Obama's "offer" this week to "compromise" with the Republicans. As if it was ever the Republicans holding anything up!!!! The House Democrats cannot make a deal with the Senate Democrats and therefore we have NO HEALTHCARE reform. Obama keeps talking about "his plan" but has NO PLAN. Where is the Obama Helathcare reform plan? There is none. We have a Senate bill and a House bill, there is no Obama plan. Since he cannot get his own party to go along, now he is trying to makea deal with a couple of Republicans to offset some Democrats. What a mess. This guy could break an anvil. HAND him filibuster proof majority in both houses and he can't get a single thing done! He is a complete failure as a President and as a party leader. The guy couldn't organize a girl scout march.

We really don't need to draw comparisons to Hitler. Please stop with silly stuff.

What it means is exactly what I said. Obama was/is popular in Europe because he wasn't George Bush.

I said nothing more than that.

Your silly diatribe only illustrates what a humorless wanker you are. But then I already knew that.

So anyone that wasn't Bush would get 90% approval in Germany? Freaking brilliant.
