Surprised that Honolulu isn't on there then. Seems like a lot of expensive places to live. I'd hope they would be the best places to live at how many of them cost.

I definitely have to plan a trip to Canada during summer. Based on what I see and read, including browsing around (wasting time) using google streetview, the place is awesome.

Ultimately, the people, their attitude and their demeanor are what truly make up a country and we all know Canadians tend to rock in this area. If there ever was an international study based on 'who do you feel like knocking out the most' ranking, my guess is that Canadians would pretty-much be last. While those from the LA, Jersey Shore area would probably be ranked first. Even Gandhi would want to send some punches towards those clowns.

I think Honolulu is one of the highest ranking US cities on the list. My friend just had his honeymoon there and loved it.

This reminds me of the following little experiment I conducted for my good scandalous friend..

Canada: - Vancouver metro area (Random)

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=49....,143.74,,0,4.22

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&layer=...803448&z=13

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&layer=...213791&z=11

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&layer=...213791&z=11

US: - Chicago metro area (Random)

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41....182.28,,0,-4.51

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41....,294.02,,0,-5.3

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41....,299.52,,0,0.36

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41....177.53,,0,-0.97

As I recall, the excuse was that google US wasn't as clear as Canada's. Yep that must be it..

Jane and Finch.

I used to live about 2 miles from here, at Kipling and Finch, from 1992-1994. We were newcomers to the city and didn't know the neighborhood very well. When we moved in the building was decent. By the time we left, the apartment building became infested with baggy pants kids hanging around the rear parking lot, presumably selling drugs. Cops were coming out on a regular basis. We moved to Mississauga.

Despite the inevitable urban blemishes, drugs, crime and poverty - Toronto remains a wonderful, wonderful city with great neighborhoods, fantastic ethnic food choices (Greek along the Danforth, Jamaican, several Chinatowns along Spadia, Richmond Hill, and Mississauga, etc.), the Toronto Islands, Harborfront, Scarborough Bluffs, High Park, Black Creek Pioneer Village, and much more.

Liveable for whom?

What is the average home purchase price for Melbourne and is the medium wage?

Bump

'Average' salary per person is $53K USD and the Median house price is ~$520K USD.

Not sure what you mean in "Liveable for whom?". The study ranks 140 cities on quality of life. Contrary to the personal opinion of your Palins and others, e.g., "we're the best in the world", evidently the US is not. Heck, I don't need a study to tell you that. Like a second/third world country, if you live in a gated community in the US, yeah life in this restricted area with 5000 sq foot homes is not too bad at all. However, such folks are clearly restricted to such areas. What about the rest of Americans that don't live in gated communities. First trailer, for example, I ever saw was when I visited the US. The thing about Australian metro areas, is that there is just so much to do, and it's accessible to be enjoyed by all. Based on what I have seen, Canada is the same.

The study is not just about neighborhoods, that is just one facet of it. Like the survey, I am talking about overall quality of life. Freedom from crime to enjoy new, modern and clean metro areas. Whereas, one wrong turn in the nations capital, down east DC, and you can be in a lot of trouble. To me personally, the majority of the US cities seem old, dingy and run down. Evidently such studies seem to agree. No?

You have to live it to know what I am talking about. Considering barely 25% of Americans have passports, compared to the 70 to 80% of those from other first world nations, it's why (as I said before) clowns like Palin can get away with totally unsubstantiated best in the world comments. People here seem to be centered (focused) around their neighborhoods, their strip malls, and ignore the overall picture.

I can say that Santa Monica is such a lovely place, well at least in the specific area where my husband and I live right now. A couple from NYC moved two months ago and when I met them, they said that this is truly a place to live and it's so different from where they come from.

I do agree that it's our personal preference that makes a region liveable, not the surveys or what the magazines tell us. Publications are just being suggestive.

Keen on comments, well comments that exclude the clownish 'what are you still doing here'..
