Lawyer or No Lawyer? Lining up the ducks!

Thanks, everybody who answered this thread - both on and off the board. For the moment I think we're going to start the process alone ... well, not truly alone, as we have you folks here to keep us company as we go.

I would suggest that you go solo and dont use a lawyer. We hired a lawyer and we could have done with out one. VJ is a great place to get all the help you need.

I suggest what Laura and IanM suggested you. It will cost money to hire a lawyer, plus they can not make the process faster for you. Do lots of reading on this site regarding K-3, CR-1 and ask questions. Even ask questions when you fill out any forms. I am sure, you will make friends here. By the way, I have met some wonderful people here and lot of people here mail me with their questions and I do my best to answer them. You can save the money that you would use for the lawyer for airline tickets.

I am new at this and doing the K-1 but did hire a lawyer and wish I hadn't.

it can make things slower (with potential for screw-ups) when they tell you what to get together, you send it to them, they send it off, they get notices, send them to you, you send RFE to them, they send it off...

in straightforward cases it's much better to just send the forms yourself!

if you can find a lawyer that will consult with you but let you send the forms, as I know at least one person here did, that would be ideal I would think, if you feel better having a lawyer and have the money.

also, when I hired the lawyer I was talking to him, but since then it's just been an office assistant.
