Hi Everyone,

I might be freaking out over nothing but just wanted to know if on the DS-156 you can hand sign the "signature and date" part at the end or if that also had to be typed on the computer. I don't understand why it wouldn't be hand signed but fiance is worried because he thinks it should've been typed as well. Does anyone have any insights on this? We would try calling the embassy but they are closed till Tuesday which is his interview date! Thanks for any info you can provide :crying:

Of course, the signature has to be an actual signature. Some people even use a blue pen to distinguish that their signature is authentic. The date may either be typed or handwritten.

You should be fine.

All the best for the rest of the process.

Enjoy the weekend!

Another quick question, does it matter when you sign and date it? Does it have to be before interview date or on interview date?

Your interview isn't that far. You may date and sign it now. You may also choose to do that on the day of your actual interview but you might just be too busy and excited that you would overlook the date and signature.

Congratulations! The visa is on its way to you. Give your best on Tuesday for your interview. I had my K1 interview on a Tuesday, too, in the Philippines last year.

A "signature" is ALWAYS signed by hand, otherwise it is not a signature

I can understand why there would be some confusion on this. The DS-156 is an "eVisa" form which is completed online. Because of this, the US embassy in Tokyo stresses that "handwritten or typed forms will not be accepted", which might give the impression that nothing should be written on the form by hand.

When you use the eVisa system to fill out the form it will generate a PDF of the completed form for you to download and print. The PDF will NOT have anything written in any section that requires a signature and date. After printing, he should sign and date the form by hand, and also apply the visa photo in the space provided. All of the other information for the form should be submitted online while preparing the PDF file. The reason they don't want you completing any of this information by hand is because the last page of the PDF document will contain a two dimensional rectangular bar code. This bar code contains an encoded copy of all of the information included on the form. The Embassy can extract all of the information from the form by scanning the bar code. Anything information written on the form by hand would not be included in the bar code, and would not be extracted when the form was scanned. The signature and date are not included in the bar code, and must be completed by hand.

You will sign it by hand at the date of the interview in front of the officer. Read the checklist one more time. That's how it is in Romania.

I haven't seen the instruction packet from the Embassy in Tokyo, but their website says they want the DS-156(K) signed at the interview. It doesn't say anything about signing the DS-156 at the interview.
