Sen. ####### Durbin (D-Ill.) blasted Washingtonians for going “into a full-scale panic” during snowstorms, unlike people from Illinois who “know how to live with it.”

“I first came here as a student in 1963 … I lived a big part of my life, at least part-time, in Washington, D.C.,” Durbin said in remarks delivered on the Senate floor on Thursday. “I never could get over how people in this town reacted to snow.

“I am convinced that infants born in Washington, D.C., are taken from the arms of their loving mothers right when they are born into a room where someone shows a film of a snowstorm with shrieking and screaming so that those children come to believe snow is a mortal enemy, like a nuclear attack, because I have seen, for over 40 years here, people in this town go into a full-scale panic at the thought of a snowfall.

“We joke about it. Those of us from parts of the country that get snow and know how to live with it cannot get over how crazy the reaction is many times."

I had a guy from Chicago say the same ####### at work and rolled him, as someone from Alaska said on the news that they too had never seen that much snow fall in a single day.

Must be a Chicago thing. When they are not doing dodgy corrupt deals, they are talking out of their azz. Like Scandal, he absolutely cannot accept the reality that Chicago is ranked poorly abroad.

I hope Scandal doesn't see the just released 2010 worlds best cities from the EU.

:secret: those aren't shovels ... and they are not used for coffee ...

I can't feel my face.

EVERY place that has snow generally maintains enough equipment and supplies to deal with a "normal" storm for their area. Maybe once a decade or so, they'll have a storm that's abnormal for their area and everything will be shut down for awhile.

It takes a lot more snow to shut down Minneapolis or Buffalo than it does to shut down Memphis or Washington DC. But I think all of those cities get shut down roughly equally as often. My sister was living in Houston when they got a dusting of a half inch or so that completely paralyzed the city. Houston doesn't maintain a fleet of snowplows and salt trucks.

It's not that residents of warmer cities are wimps (well, maybe they ARE wimps, but), it's that they don't have the equipment to deal with it, their residents down keep snowtires or chains on their vehicles, they don't have winter driving experience, etc. And why should they?

Honestly -- would you rather have hundreds of thousands of people who don't know how to drive in heavy snow driving in heavy snow...or have work shut down until it can be made more manageable? My wife was born and raised in Buffalo, living much of her adult life there as well...and SHE had never seen more snow in a short span of time than what they got in Washington.

Durbin should be buried in a snow drift for his ignorant remarks.

Well I live in Maryland and we got 30 inches last weekend and then over a foot on Wednesday. That's as much snow as we got for the whole Winter some years. It was nice having four days off because of the government being shutdown, really five since I called in sick today (my body hurts LOL), but after all that freaking shoveling I think rather of went to work.
