...shockingly require Maryland men to submit their fingerprints and other background information before they can initiate communication with a foreign woman if they use an “International Marriage Broker”.

.....

What is shocking about that? According to IMBRA, international dating sites are not necessarily considered marriage brokers.

Definition of an International Marriage Broker. “International marriage broker” is defined as an entity (whether or not U.S.-based) that charges fees for providing matchmaking services or social referrals between U.S. citizens/permanent residents and foreign nationals. The definition also exempts nonprofit religious or cultural matchmaking services, and dating services that do not match U.S. citizens/residents with aliens as their principal business and that charge comparable rates and offer comparable services to all clients, regardless of gender or country of citizenship.

I Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The original article really puts a slant on the legislation. We saw the same thing when IMBRA was introduced...all the female politicians were targeted even though it passed with bipartisan support and was signed by then President Bush. From the number of complaints just on this site alone, you would have thought IMBRA was going to end international marriages. Guess what? International marriages are still alive and well.

Given the opportunity to regulate one thing (marriage brokers),

they will grab the opportunity to micro-manage that regulation

by establishing rules & limits that go beyond logic and good sense.

Legislators don't have anything better to do.

Most likely, a lobby group put pressure on the legislatures who authored the bill.
