Social Security Card Question

Just got married and it will soon be 2 weeks after arrival and then my fiance can apply for her social security #

but, I don't want problems with these stupid SS employees, so I don't know what is best

The SS application says the name you want on the card and then it says full name at birth

We want her name to be the same as my last name, so will the SS people when they check to see if she is in the database, will they look to see that her old last name is in the database and then realize she just got married and put it through with no problem

or should we just get the social security # in her old name so it matches and then worry about changing it later

the passport we will show them has her old last name, and we will bring a copy of the marriage certificate to show we got married

Also we will want to apply for a drivers license in her new name and if her social security # is in her old name, I wonder if they will understand that she got married and let you have the license in the new name.

Seems to me that all these government employees are married too and did their name change so can't they understand anything and lets not have problems.

Whatever name she used on here USCIS paperwork (visa) will be in the SSA's database. So you will have a disconnect there.

You can try to get it now, since you are married, taking your marriage cert - but be prepared for problems.

They may also want you to wait till you get the AOS done - I've seen posts here doing that.

The usual procedure is to get the SSN before marriage, (after waiting 2 weeks once at POE), get married, then go back to name change.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

Agree with above.

I personally can't change my SSN because my K1 stuff still has my maiden name and I haven't done AOS yet.

I read about a girl who was successful at changing it, but had issues with tax because things didn't match up.

By all means go in and try, trying doesn't hurt. Personally I'm not bothering. I'll go in and do it when I have my EAD (or GC, whatever comes first) because I can't get a drivers licence yet anyway (because of I-94 expiry date) so I'll do it all at once.

I'm on the exactly same situation and I agree with you, why rush if it won't change much until we have the EAD or GC.

:)

My life is perfect now, I'm here with my love and everything is great! I feel blessed, thank you God for all your plans, they are way better than I could have ever asked for.

MUCH LESS HASSLE.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

My recommendation would be to get the SSN now in her maiden name and then make an appointment later to change the name with the marriage certificate. Much easier in the long run.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

You do not have to wait for two weeks. Get the card in her maiden name, change the name after she has her EAD or Green card.
