I know I'm going to hell for contemplating this... but sometimes I get really bad ideas that I must share with the world against my better judgment.

I was think Gretsky could have lit Terry Fox's artificial limb with the torch and carried it around the area aflame before throwing it down and slapshotting it into the Olympic cauldron.

Just read this online:

VANOC boss John Furlong stated flat-out during an interview with Global National that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky will not light the Olympic cauldron on Friday at B.C. Place.

Also keep in mind it is not as if the Olympics won't return to Canada again in Gretzky's lifetime. Canada is hosting its third Games of the past 34 years. It is not unreasonable to think that if Toronto ever hosted, Gretzky, as a Southern Ontario native, would be the final torch bearer. This is Vancouver's time, and that means deferring to someone who has B.C. roots.

Interesting....

Steve Nash carried it yesterday, he's now back in the US for the All-Star Weekend. Any other BC possibilities?

Well I was wrong on both counts. :bonk: So much for believing what you read on the internet!

Of course it was gretzky

The opening ceremonies were pretty good, I bet they were spectacular in person.

 It must have been amazing in person!

I was moved more by the people carrying the Olympic flag than the torch at the end.

I also thought k d lang was amazing.

Was anyone else sort of giggling when they had technical difficulties? I thought Gretzky was going to lose it, he went from smiling to being like: "####### guys"

I felt bad for Catriona Le May Doan though, she didn't even get to light her side. ROBBED! :P

Absolutely. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. I think her cover of "Hallelujah" may top even Jeff Buckley's...and I'd always considered HIS version to be one of the best covers of all time.

It's amusing to me how some cover artists remove a couple of the more explicit verses though... And a lot of people surely think "Hallelujah" is a religious song, when really it's about apostasy...about testing one's faith in the face of love, and finding love to be more powerful.

When KD came out my husband asked: "What's Chastity Bono doing there?" :bonk:

For the first split second that I saw her, I thought "Who's he?" before I realized it was k d lang. Honestly...her voice has never sounded better, and it was NOT lip-synced either. Amazing performance.

I didn't really like that spoken word bit.

Funnily enough, I was saying to my parents before it came on, "Why do they have a ###### SLAM poet? What a travesty. How horrible. Why would they do that?" etc. etc. Yeah, I'm really hyper-critical about poetry. :P But to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't profound or overly deep...but I think it was effective, and his performance was good. Typically I think of slam poetry as a capella rap, with more obscurity and less relevance...but I didn't mind it last night. That's a first for me.

I thought kd was fabulous, so did my Husband.

As for the spoken word part - I liked most of it really - I must say though, with him standing up on that podium and the tone - I fully expected him to say I AM CANADIAN at the end :hehe:

Was kind of neat last night at the hospital---Talking to the son of 1 of my patients---he finds out I'm Cdn, and he asks have I ever heard Sass Jordan!! hell ya! lol Turns out he did a bunch of video work on a few of her videos back in the 80's!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Haha that's what I didn't like about it. A little too patriotic.

I was thinking the same thing. It was so patriotic some of it may have been slightly contorted and delusional. A couple things he said about Canada I really didn't think we're true. Canada is the "new" in "what's new" or something like that... what the heck is that even suposed to mean?

I had never heard of KD Lang until last night. I thought it was a guy...
