How good of an idea would it be to drive over the border together

So we've been roughly planning out our visits for this year and the idea of him coming to Ontario in late spring/early summer for a week or so came up. It's been the plan that I'd come down here for a few weeks in the summertime, and so we were thinking maybe I could drive back with him when he leaves and then I just need to buy a return ticket.

I guess what I'm wondering is how likely is the border going to let that fly? I don't have a lease I could bring as I live with my mom (I just finished schooling this December) and I will (hopefully) have my vehicle by then but I wouldn't be driving it down and I don't know if bringing the ownership or insurance information with me would be enough. I currently have a job to go back to, but they just let me have six weeks off to come down here for this visit so I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the time off from them for my summer visit. It's a basic, entry-level restaurant job and so it wouldn't tear me up too much if I had to leave to make the visits work for the later part of this year, but leaving the job/not having a job to show the border I could go back to might throw up some alarms at the border.

Thoughts?

My husband and I (then boyfriend) drove across together. They didn't raise any flags.

Best thing to do so you don't go to the border and get denied, is to have your mom write you a letter stating you live with her. Any bills you have like a cell phone, car lease, car insurance bill. Also, a job letter and paystubs. Have the information of address and phone number of where you will be staying

2/7/13 mailed I130 x 2

2/14/13 checks cashed $420 x 2

4/3/13 RFE more divorce info requested and marriage certificate(which I had already sent)

4/9/13 mailed additional info

4/19/13 I130 approved

5/10/13 NVC received

5/16/13 Called NVC and got Case #s and Invoice ID #s

5/24/13 Paid AOS ($88.00) fee online

5/30/13 Emailed I-864 package for both kids

6/3/13 paid IV bill $230 x 2 kids

6/5/13 IV bill shows paid, DS260 available

I have travelled numerous times with my husband (also many times before we were married), and we got pulled into secondary a few times (while I was pregnant), but otherwise we have just been quizzed a bit but they eventually let us through. I also did not have any ties to canada as i jsut finished school and was living with parents. Since we have been married its been a piece of cake crossing. I tell them i have my paperwork for cr-1 visa and we have not had much issue at all. I would just try to pack light...as packing huge suitcase has raised some questions with border guards. Good Luck :)

Your "ties" are kinda weak. If you get some stiffneck who thinks you might be on a 1 way trip you might get denied.

Or maybe if you take everything you can think of to prove it's just a visit and the officer is reasonable you might get through.

You can never get in trouble for telling the truth so stick with that and hope for the best!

In July 2008, my then-girlfriend-now-wife and I did something similar. She flew up to Canada to meet me and visit my family for a week, and then we drove together back to Salt Lake City for me to spend the summer with her and her family (as I had been doing for several years previously). She had no problems with Canada Customs flying in on a one-way ticket. The only even-close-to-problem we had is I got a stern warning from the CBP officer at the PoE (the same PoE where, a year later, I would enter on my K-1 visa) to, as he said, "DO IT RIGHT!".

I think the only reason we got through was that I said those two little words customs officers love to hear in that situation: "fiance visa" :) It didn't even occur to me at the time that I might need toes to Canada, as we were not then engaged and hadn't filed any immigration anything. I was able to tell them that I was a teacher with a contract to start in Septamber, and was able to give them a specific return-by date.

DON'T PANIC

"It says wonderful things about the two countries [Canada and the US] that neither one feels itself being inundated by each other's immigrants."

question is brought up a zillion times a month in the Canadian forum, lol Most have no problems visiting alone, or with the spouse with them. BUT it all depends on the POE officer. Some even with strong ties to Canada don't care!! But I say most have no problems, bu tno one can truly give you a yes/no answer, one just has to be prepared!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
