Even Seattle of all places has this knuckle-dragging neanderthal behavior. Socioeconomics to blame for this one too?

The girl, who is black, also told the detective that the altercation began at a nearby department store, where some in the group made threatening comments that she had "nice things" and that she acts "white."

I can see that this is going to become little more than a pissing match, but before it gets locked or there are too many personal insults hurled I'll comment on the actual topic.

It's hard to say if this girl was actually "bashed for 'acting too white,'" but this attitude, that if you are polite, studious, serious, etc., that you are being an "uncle tom" or "trying to act white" was one of the things that shocked and disappointed me when I first began teaching a couple of decades ago. It exists and it is damaging. It is an attitude of failure and a method to make sure that everyone fails equally. It is very unfortunate and it can only be addressed from inside the culture.

Having said that, I don't notice it as much where I'm currently teaching. Of course, there are even fewer white kids at my current school than the school where I began my teaching career, and I teach a literacy course, so none of my students are particularly polite, studious, or serious, so that might have something to do with it. But I would like to believe that things have changed in the intervening years while I've been abroad.

Comments like this happen all the time at the hs where I teach. Any brown or black kid who speaks properly or without an accent or doesn't dress/act thuggish or gangsta is acting "white".

Thankfully, success in school is NOT associated with a certain race at the hs where I teach.

for the record- i saw this on FOXnews last night & noone- o'reilly, hannity, or greta mentioned anything about the racial cause of the fight. i didn't hear that part until i read this thread.

I heard about the story on Hannity's radio show and from Mark Levin, and BOTH focused on the racial aspect.
