Moving here in United States is hard for me especially here in Michigan. Why I say this? Everything is new for me. I need to adjust in everything, from food, weather, culture, language, etc. It`s my first year of my residency here in MI, but still I can`t get around without my husband. Transportation here are mostly cars, not like in other state they have some subway trains, there are some public transportation here like taxi and buses but they pass by only in the main street. So, I was forced to learn to drive. I am in my 5months now of my driving lessons and it is really hard. Oftentimes when I am practicing, my husband and I keep on yelling each other, well , he was scared with me when I am on the road. Well, not just him, if he is scared I am more scared because accident happends everywhere. I am still hesitant to drive because almost 6 months ago my mom died in vehicular accident. But what do I do? I need to drive. I am just forcing myself even I don`t like to do it or else I will always be hibernating here in the house in my entire life here. I want to work soon and do some errands on my own.

In my driving lessons, this DVD - Rules of the Road really help me. We can`t afford to enrol in Driving School so we decide just to have this instructional video. Now, I can drive in some free ways with my husbands` supervision of course. I`m a little bit nervous but I have to pursue this for my own sake. For those new drivers like me try to look at it and it will help you in many ways. Hoping to have my road test this spring. I am hoping I can be confident enought to do that.

Thanks for sharing this. I enrolled in adriving school as well.. but for only a few hrs..did not help me at all . I still recommend the best way i learned how to drive.

I play the driving assimilation game in my husband's xbox everytime i get a chance to..and without knowing it..i was surprised myself when i first drive in my car..as if i been driving for years.

Now am glad my hubby forced me to play his driving assimilation game,,if not i can not drive my self to and back from work.

hi there! I would like share some tips about driving...

the no.1 problem is when you can't get rid of nervousness -so it doesn't help that you have a teacher yelling at you hehe

(don't yell back, just keep your cool and concentrate)

you have to convince yourself that you can do it (if an 90-yr old, you sure can too!) slowly put away the thought of accidents in driving because they are, which means they won't happen just because you're driving

familiarize yourself with your car, -where is the stick is, the brakes, gas pedal, mirror/light controls etc

practice your coordination: hand-on-the-steering wheel/stick, foot on the gas/brake etc, so that eventually it becomes natural to you (you don't think about where your foot is vis a vis your hand) and you don't look down there anymore

drive short distances first applying your coordination, judgment of speed, pressure on the gas/brake and steering wheel

then do longer drives.

if you don't get comfortable first with the basic driving, worrying about how to get to your destination will jsut make it worse.

good luck and god bless! :)

Driving is all about experience. You need to drive more to get rid of fear. In time you'll gain some more skills and then you'll love driving.

My husband is the one teaching me how to drive. I am driving a total of 6 hours a week because weather isn't good in some days, we need to have timing. I am trying to at least make my parking ability a bit better and practice in highway. Me and husband thinking of having my road test this early March.

I didn't enroll in driving school because it's so very expensive.

Good Luck To Us Whose Getting Driver's License!

I agree. Speeding up needs to be gradually applies too. I started getting comfortable from 10... then 25.... then 35... and then.... 40 mph, I practice at back road for 55-60 mph.. I didn't force myself to drive so fast immediately. I suggest to practice at the back roads because you can go 25 mph, then up to 60 mph if you are comfortable speeding up.

Oftentimes when I am practicing, my husband and I keep on yelling each other, well , he was scared with me when I am on the road.

1) Husbands should not teach wives and wives should not teach husbands. This is a good way to hurt a marriage. It puts a lot of stress on the relationship.

2) Did you (or anyone here) have any trouble understanding the Driver's Manual and the written or computer test? You have to pass a written test in my state first before you can get a permit to practice driving on the road with another licensed driver. I am not sure my fiancee's English is good enough to understand all the rules in the driver's manual.

Thanks and good luck. This is a very interesting post.

I am also learning how to drive with my hubby as the teacher. The good thing is my hubby will not shout at me during the driving session.

At first, we drive in the vacant parking lot then in our neighborhood and then to the street. Next, he will let me try driving in the freeway

though just thinking about it makes me nervous but I keep telling myself to conquer my fear and nervousness. It's also good to have a goal and

my goal is to drive in the freeway. It may sound too ambitious but that's my way of pushing myself to strive more.

It really helps to practice thru this driving assimilation game coz you will at the very first learn car control before you even sit behind the wheels. And gives you more experience in driving .Believe me it really worked for me.
