We live in a very rural area and mice are a persistant problem. We use a mouse poison called d-CON. It comes in a cardboard package and you open the top to expose the pellets and leave it on the floor close to the area you have seen the mouse. The only problem is, unlike a trap, you don't know where you might find the dead mouse. If you had any pets or young children, not sure if it would be a safe alternative. We have also found that some of the mice like to take the pellets and hide them (hubby found a bunch in a pair of sneakers he hadn't worn for a while), so if that would be a problem, you may not want to use this option.

Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I really like the bottle-with-chocolate-sauce one. I will try that if the humane traps hubby ordered today don't work. I suspect they won't, but the man wants to give them a shot.

And oh, we do have a shotgun. Hubby inherited it after his grandfather passed away a few years ago. Hubby took it out just now (I hadn't told him about this thread yet at that time) and said, "I'll take care of the mouse problem, hon."

I got jumpy when we got home from work. Made hubby stay in the room with me while I folded laundry and changed into my jammies. Now waiting for hubby to finish a few rounds of Counterstrike before I ask him to accompany me to the bathroom so I can brush my teeth.

I am a true wuss ...

Don't you get scared ?!?!?!??!??!?!?!?!??!

My total sympathy!! We had a mouse problem too a few months back. I was afraid to touch anything unless I found one underneath something. Well, we got the box of poision and something you plug into wall sockets to repel them and they have gone now. Only since then have we found out how they were getting in, a hole in the back of a kitchen cabinet apparantly. YUK!!

OMG don't use those sticky traps. I tried them last year and they are so awful. They don't die they just squeal. One actually drug it's self and the trap under the fridge. I broke out in a cold sweat and almost had convulsions every time I caught one  I did throw some poison under the house this fall and so far I've not seen one.

My hubby saw me reading this thread and decided to read it too. I told him a few of you have suggested getting the electronic repellent, and he's game.

YAY !!!!!!!!!!

We're gonna order one now. :P

I'm gonna add a second vote for d-con. I've used it with great success for both mice and rats....kills them by dessication, so you don't have any worries about a gooey corpse, it's dried up and easy to dispose of.

So??? Did u get rid of the mice?

I have grown to detest them. We have a cabin and you CANT use poison or you will find the bodies all over the next spring and its NOT pleasant! My sis has used poison twice now and I will scream if she ever tries it again.

Peppermint oil is a GREAT deterrent for the lil critters too. Its expensive, but if you use it like on piping and stuff where they mite try to crawl up, it will sure keep them away. Our trailer now smells like peppermint oil or a big candy cane every time we leave, but it sure keeps them from coming in. I HOPE we have solved the problem this year, it does work temporarily for a couple weeks at a time, not sure it will last all winter tho. Here's hoping...

If you see one it means there are another dozen in the walls. Good luck.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
