My Fiancee got approved for her K1 Visa and received the actual visa in hand just a few hours ago.

I am strapped for cash, so there will only be one ticket....... for my fiancee

I am looking to transport her from Vientiane, Laos (VTE) all the way to John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) or Boston Logan (BOS)

There are layovers though.... I am worried. She will be okay with a layover in Bangok. But in other options, there could be layovers in Vietnam, Korea, or Japan before taking the final flight to the United States.

She can barely read English.

Should I make her a sign or write her a big poster "please direct me to this flight", with the itinerary attached?

Thank You.

As to your question: you can make a small sign or print a letter that has her full itinerary so she can get assistance at the airport.

You may also write a letter saying who she is, where she is traveling and why and put down your contact information - it may come handy at POE.

I had a similiar concern with my fiancee, now wife.

She had never traveled outside ph, had layovers in tokyo and atlanta. I boworred the money to go to ph and fly back with her.

any other ways im not sure. maybe contact the airline and see if they can put her in the program that they put children in when flying alone.

Yes, have her print out her itinerary sheet and make sure she understands which flights are which. (In fact, have her make two copies and keep one safe, in case she loses the other.) At the connecting airport she can just point to the flight on the itinerary sheet and ask in English "Where?" and/or mime the question with gestures. If she's really ambitious, learning "Where?" in the local language of the airport might be useful. Anyway, many times I have successfully used the pointing/miming technique in places where nobody spoke a language I understood. Miming is a traveler's best friend.

The main thing is to reassure her that all will be fine, to stay calm, and know that there are always some uniformed people at airports who will be glad to help direct her.

Brother its done every day... do your research on the airports involved in her itinerary. Provide her with maps, and notes to give someone in the language of the country where she will have layovers. The regional forums here can be a greaat asset when it comes to getting help in different languages.. be it Thai VN or others... The major airports in VN are actually pretty small compared to other countries... The airport in Seoul can be a challenge because it is large, but a note in english given to the information desk can get her where she needs to be...

I had the same concern. I wrote a letter to be presented at the POE and included my cell phone number. The officer actually called me and made sure I could explain the 90 day time limit to get married. He was very nice and helpful and allowed me to talk to my fiance on the phone. That probably doesn't happen everywhere, but it was nice for us. I also wrote out step by step instructions in Portuguese for him to follow when changing planes. Then I had common phrases written in English with the Portuguese translation so that he could just point when he needed to ask for help. Of course the fewer airports she has to go through the better, but things will be fine. If she has information printed in English, there will be people that can help her get to the right connecting flights. Good luck to you and congratulations on getting the visa.

I am going through this with my fiancee as well. She has a layover in Tokyo and it is only 90 minutes. I told her to ask questions immediately and someone will eventually help you. I believe the most important thing is to have some confidence so that you do go and ask questions when it can not be figured out - so I am being very positive and telling her that she will be able to do this well.

My bigger concern than the stopover in Japan is any forms that need to be filled out when arriving in the US. Her english is good enough to ask questions to help her with the stopover problem, but not likely going to be good enough to fill out a customs form.

Does anyone know exactly what forms someone with a K-1 visa will have to fill out? If that form is on the internet, maybe I can fill it out beforehand and she can copy it on the original when she gets it.

Thanks!

She will have to fill out an I 94 and a customs form.

I don't see a way you could fill out either form in advance for her. At least the customs one has a sample on that link - maybe would help?

Thanks TracyTN.

If I planned ahead (maybe recommended for anyone else) I could have collected an extra form on a return to the US and then mailed (or hand delivered) a filled out version for the eventual entry. One less thing for the fiancee to worry about.

Instead, I will use the sample and send her a pdf that she could use as a reference when filling out the real deal.

Thanks again.

My fiancee left Vientiane, Laos on April 12, and had layovers in Bangkok (1 Hour) and Beijing (12 hours) before arriving to JFK.

All she had was a letter citing "Dear Sir/Mam, Please help direct me to my flight" and I also typed out the itinerary on the same page in a table format with bold letters.

My fiancee is Laotian, and Lao and Thai language are pretty much the same so she fared well in Bangkok during her one hour layover. However, according to my fiancee's experience: "Beijing was huge, a Finnish guy I was with didn't even know where to go but he helped me".

Lastly, the sign that I made for her that I repeatedly expressed her for use..... she did not use the sign at all.

In worst case scenario, allow for sufficient layover time in regions where fiance/fiancee is not familiar with language. The best thing he/she can do is just wave the flight itinerary to an airport employee and someone will point in the right direction.

My fiancee had someone else fill out her custom forms for her before arriving at JFK. I was waiting at the arrivals and I was so frustrated from the wait that I walked away to order pizza and took a bathroom break. When I came back to resume waiting for her to come through the open doors to the United States like all the other people do (i missed that moment).............. she snuck behind me with a big luggage cart .

Like I said.... just allow sufficient layover time to find help...
