In Chicago, and most suburban Chicagoland municipalities, residents and business owners are required by law to remove snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses. Do I extrapolate, and suggest that this is the law of the land throughout the USA? I guess this is indeed the land of individual initiative and personal responsibility. Sigh. How droll.

10-8-180 Snow and Ice Removal

Every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant or other person having charge of any building or lot of ground in the city abutting upon any public way or public place shall remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of such building or lot of ground. If the sidewalk is of greater width than five feet, it shall not be necessary for such person to remove snow and ice from the same for a space wider than five feet. In case the snow and ice on the sidewalk shall be frozen so hard that it cannot be removed without injury to the pavement, the person having charge of any building or lot of ground as aforesaid shall, within the time specified, cause the sidewalk abutting on the said premises to be strewn with ashes, sand, sawdust, or some similar suitable material, and shall, as soon thereafter as the weather shall permit, thoroughly clean said sidewalk. The snow which falls or accumulates during the day (excepting Sundays) before four p.m. shall be removed within three hours after the same has fallen or accumulated. The snow which falls or accumulates on Sunday or after four p.m.

When I grew up, I never heard of such a thing.

Where I grew up, in Canada, we had these nifty orange sidewalk clearing gizmos to do the deed. Residents shoveled their private driveways, of course, but our commie politburo took care of the public thoroughfares, including the sidewalks. Oh how I yearn for true Communism again!

Unless I'm mistaken, it seems implicit in your local ordinance that "public sidewalk" maintenance is subjugated by the owner of the proximate "private property." Thereby making the "public" property not "public" at all, as it must be maintained by the "private."

What a paradox!

Of course--respectfully--I disagree with your false dilemma of "individual initiative" or "communism".

This is an issue of the public sector shirking their responsibility to maintain public thoroughways.

That's just one of the ways in which they instill uniformity and dependence. It's an evil scheme. Evil.

Cannot extrapolate... not the law of the land throughout...

YMMV

I am in Kolkata, India right now. This city is chaos personified. Total fuсking anarchy. Everyone does what they want, if they can afford it. No regulations - none that can't be bought out anyway. This city has whored its soul out to the rich. The result isn't nice. No, not nice at all. The result is ugly. It's sad and depressing. Except for the tiny little enclaves which serve as the playground of the wealthy. Those are like wow. Super awesome. But that is what makes the rest even more sad.

Give me socialism any day.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
