Tax return x tax transcripts

Guys I've seen people saying that we have to send the tax transcripts along with the tax return and W2.

Isn't tax transcripts "the same" thing as tax return? Here is what my in-law says (he is my co-sponsor and is gathering his documents) :

"we need the definition of tax transcripts. If you provide the returns themselves, do you need to provide tax transcripts as well? I'm thinking that the transcripts are simply a summary of the returns. What information would a tax transcript have that is not in the returns? I'm sure we can provide what they're asking for if we know what it is. Please see if you can provide me a definitive definition of tax transcripts and find out what info the transcripts might have that is not in the returns. I'm thinking that the returns themselves are the best source you can provide."

Also, one more thing... hopefully my interview should be some time around April/May. Do you think I'll be requested to show them the 2009 tax returns/transcripts/W2 or the 2008,07,06 will suffice?

Sorry, but this is all very confusing to me!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

IRS tax transcripts, are as you said, the same thing. They're simply a better more concise version AND you know that you haven't accidentally forgotten something. I personally prefer the IRS tax transcripts but it's up to you. I know the instructions state that if you send the returns, then you must include ALL W2's, 1099's and schedules. Also, the I-864 instructions actually TELL you what line goes where for the form if you use a tax transcript.

If you file after April 15 2010 then a 2009 return will be required.

Tax transcripts are more valid as the are from IRS and they prove you filed. A person can make out all kinds of phony returns and submit them to USCIS without having submitted them to IRS.

There is very little cross checking between the agencies.

A Tax Transcript is an official IRS version of your tax return. It is free, and what the Visa Officers perfer, rather than a copy of a tax return, with W2s. If possible have the 2009 tax transcript. If not possible, have a copy of the 09 tax return, with W2s. You can get tax transcripts about a week or so after sending in the Form 4506-T. Once you send in your 09 tax return, wait a week or so, and send in the Form 4506-T.

Takes more like 8 weeks to get tax transcripts after you file your taxes . At least it did for me.

just clarifying info. so if we get the tax transcripts then the tax returns and w-2s are not needed? as i wastrying to figure out why all that paper work was needed. so 3 years tax transcripts from irs or 3 years returns plus w2-s

Thanks so much for your replies!!! :)

I'll tell him to request the tax transcripts by the phone or mail then!!

So I think I'll have to send in my affidavits in March/April to NVC. Do you think they will request the tax returns for 2009 or just the W2 will be enough?

My father in law said he can file it soon, but I don't know if we'll have it ready for the NVC stage. Maybe for the interview, though.

Any inputs would be very appreciated. Thanks again =)
