GM was the largest auto maker in the world until Toyota overtook them in 2008. They are now the 2nd largest. There are tens of millions of GM vehicles on the road.

Close to 100 million, actually.

We have some friends that owned a Ridgeline and they ended up selling it because it gets terrible gas mileage for it's size.

guess they forgot to read the window sticker ... or do some basic research prior to purchasing ...

what was their complaint? they bought it for the gas mileage?

i know what i'm thinking... US Govt and others are working to together to take advantage of toyota's problems to give domestic carmakers (especially Ford) better play.

Ford still has an ongoing recall with a cruise control switch that causes fires. In fact the two largest recalls in the US are attributed to Ford. Both with issues that can cause car fires.

They were, although i don't remember how much attention they were given. The cruise control switch recall began in 2007 and is still ongoing. The ignition switch issue was a recall back in the 90's

The only reason Toyota is getting all the attention is due to the general publics perception that they were infallible and their quality standards were at the highest level. They were so much better than the American companies. Now we see that it wasn't the case at all. Don't you know the higher the top, the longer the drop. Ask GM who once had 55% of the American market and watched it fall to ~16%.

Hopefully this will wisen up future buyers to not just go by hearsay or even company reputation, but look at specific reviews and testing of the vehicle(s) they are interested in buying.
