According to the CBP website, US $10,000 and above must be declared.

You will be fine, up to 10'000 dollars doesn't even need to be declared.

That being said, do you feel comfortable walking around with 5000 in cash? You might be better off doing a bank transfer or similar...

Yeah, one time I was traveling through Europe (traveling before moving to another country) and had wayyy too much cash on me. It was hard to enjoy anything when your always looking over your shoulder. But I didn't have much of a choice, I had to close out my bank account in Holland and travelers checks wouldn't really be accepted where I was going (that is they are a real pain).

BTW, carrying $10,000 in Travellers-cheques or cash ("negotiables") is different from carrying a $10,000 draft ("non-negotiable") as I found out in December 1990 (when I brought through a total of $14,000--$5,000 in TC's and a $9,000 draft) through the PFI at Calgary enroute to Mt. Pleasant, MI (for graduate studies).

You can bring as much cash as you want or feel comfortable doing. There is no limit. You just have to tell them if it's over $10K. There's no charge or penalty to bring it or declare it. They just keep up with sums of money over $10K, especially coming from a foreign country because of terrorist activities, money laundering, and criminal activities. It's just a paper trail. If you transfered $10K by wire from your foreign bank, the receiving bank would report it I believe is how it goes.

I took 86,000 cash with me, all hundred dollar bills, and I have a friend who brought $248K, all in cash, without problems. As has been said before, all you have to do is declare it. There's no law against carrying cash.

Simplest solution is to carry $10,000 in negotiables (cash or travellers-cheques) and rest in non-negotiables (bank-draft)--this escapes the need to declare.
