Peyton One of the Greats? Not Quite

I don't think that Manning has been surrounded by poor talent and chumps. He has the best offensive line in the game, he never gets touched. He has never been out with an injury; that's partly due to outstanding protection. He had Marvin Harrison and now has Reggie Wayne, both the cream of the crop. He also had Edggerin James prior to Addai.

How is that almost every wide receiver that goes to Indy ends up being the cream of the crop, I blame Peyton. As for James and Addai one has to ask does the coaches have a knack for finding good RB's or is it that the defense gives a little on the running game considering the very dangerous passing attack, I blame the dangerous passing attack.

You're the one who pointed out that Montana was surrounded by great talent. I pointed out that Manning has some pretty good talent on his side too. I doubt that a poor receiver would become the next Jerry Rice just because Manning is throwing him the ball.

So you chose to ignore the parts where they lost the games that mattered? I'll bet he'd trade all of his records for another ring.

I won't be surprised if Peyton gets at least two more shots at it, and at least one more ring.

It also seems you forget football is a TEAM sport. Although Peyton is an amazing quarterback, there are other players involved in both the wins and the losses. Making any single player responsible for losses, yet downplaying the wins at the same time, makes very little sense. If the Colts were my favorite team, I would have no complaints about most everything that has happened for them since the late 1990's. Not a lot of teams boast happier records.

Losing the Super Bowl undoubtedly stings. But getting there, and in to the playoffs with consistency, are significant achievements and pretty satisfying.

I know nothing has changed, if you read what I am saying you will see that thats exactly the point I am making.

No one will ever be a Jerry Rice but as long as Manning is in the game there will plenty of Harrisons.

Are you playing devils advocate considering your love for Peyton

How do you explain his taking 2 rookies (well, Austin Collie was a rookie, Pierre Garcon was effectively a rookie) and grooming them into not one, but TWO first rate receivers?

Collie finished his rookie season in the NFL among the top statistical leaders for all rookies.

Austin Collie, Receiving Statistics, Compared to All Rookie Receivers, NFL 2009 Regular Season[8]

Category Number Rank (Amongst Rookies)

Receptions 60 Tie 1st, shared with Percy Harvin

Yards 676 6th

Touchdowns 7 1st

During the 2009 season, Garçon had 47 receptions for 765 yards and 4 touchdowns.

On January 24, 2010 Garçon broke the record for most receptions in an AFC Championship Game, with 11 catches for 151 yards and 1 touchdown

Those are 2 talented players, to be sure, but you don't think Manning had anything to do with those stats?

Lot's of great players never got a Super Bowl ring...

Morten Andersen still holds quite a few NFL records, include most field goals and most games played....he was a great kicker. Never made it to the SB.

I am a poor put upon Seahawk fan, I know frustration as surely as anyone, but the Colt's with Manning have been hugely successful.

Ha! I know. I moved from New Orleans to Seattle .... I've never lived anywhere with a winning football team  My team didn't even win until NINE YEARS after I left.

Hey, I'm a Saints girl (as I think we all know, as is evidenced by my trash-talking of Brett Favre) but I like Peyton Manning. And not just because Archie's his dad either. Had the Colts been playing any other team besides the Saints I would have been firmly on their side. They are an amazing team and as I said elsewhere, the victory is all the sweeter because of it.

I am surely not a Manning fan, I live deep in Patriot country. I have fond memories of Ty Law owning his a$$ time after time. Just the though of playing in Foxboro was enough to make Manning sick. That has changed in the last few years. I say that Manning is one of the greatest to play the position , but he is not a winner. If you start your team, you take Montana, not Manning.

I think a great player will be great no matter where he plays or who is throwing him the ball. His stats will improve with a Manning or Marino throwing him the ball, but I hardly would say that Marvin Harrison would have sucked without Manning.

The Saints came to play, and were absolutely amazing. No doubt! The onside kick to open the second half, and domination of the 2nd quarter will go down as legendary in Super Bowl history. They both entered the game as seemingly unstoppable forces, the Colts even more so perhaps than the Saints. Two incredible teams.

The Saints ain't the Aints no more!

I certainly don't forget that football is a team sport. I live a stones throw from the team that made the team concept so popular today. Again, ask Marino how satisfy it was to set all those records. I'd bet the family jewels he would trade all of them for a ring.

Football is a team game. Bills would have beaten the Saints in Week 3 if they only had an offence. The defence shut down the Saints until the 4th quarter. Bills did beat the Colts so I don't know if that was an omen or not.

The Bills beat the Colts because the Colts were resting up to win the Super Bowl.
