Hi,

I recently had my visa approved  and i have been looking into flights to Oklahoma or Dallas (my fiance lives in Oklahoma). I have seen a flight that goes to Dallas but its stopover is in Toronto, Canada. Am i allowed to fly to Canada and then to Dallas or do i have to fly directly into the States and take a connecting flight? I am worried about how the US Immigration will get my 'envelope' if i enter Canada first.

Lesley

No problem for a UK citizen coming from the UK transiting Canada. You'll deliver your envelope when you clear the US port of entry.

completely fine. Canada and the US are different countries... so Canada will not have anything to do with your USCIS paperwork. Worry about that only when you first land in the US.

You may actually do your clearance there in Toronto with US Costoms and Border Patrol.

I'm not sure why you would give your paperwork over in Canada because you're not IN the US. If you're confused ask them when you land. They can't in all honestly take your paperwork as far as i'm aware, but when i doubt, ask when you get there.

There are US customs clearance at some airports outside the US (Canada, Ireland, Carribean countries). Whenever I've flown out of Toronto I've done US customs there.

If that were to be the case for you, the envelope would be handed over there in Toronto and it all happens the same as if it were at a US airport.

Canada is a little different. Most major Canadian airports have "preclearance stations" for flights to the US. It works like any other port of entry to the US, except that you go through immigration processing before you board your flight, while you're still at the Canadian airport. Then, when you land in the US, you don't do any further processing.

Regardless, you will hand-carry your envelope, and you will hand it to the US immigration officer you encounter as you clear the US immigration station. If your flight to the US doesn't go through Canada, then that would probably happen right after you first land on US soil. If your flight to the US does go through Canada, that would probably happen just before you board the leg of the flight that goes from Canada to the US.

The only issue I wonder about is whether you would need some sort of transit visa or other paperwork in order to enter Canada. Even though you probably don't plan to leave the airport, the Canadian government might want you to have a visa or something in order to fly on that route. I don't know whether this is a problem, but if I were you, I'd want to check to be sure before I booked a ticket through Canada.

Some flights leaving Toronto for the USA actually go through a US Port of Entry in the Toronto Airport. When that happens, you are legally in the USA, if not physically. The same thing happens in Dublin. You will turn over your envelope at a US port of entry. Sometimes that's before you are physically in the USA. You do this not "upon landing" but " prior to boarding the flight that will physically land in the USA.

If you are a UK citizen, transiting Canada requires no visa. If you are not a UK citizen, you may need a visa to transit Canada. Are you traveling on a UK passport.

I am a UK citizen and I would be travelling with a UK passport. I have never before had to get a visa for Canada so I would assume I wouldn't need one this time either.

You're fine to connect in Toronto.... You (as well as all other passengers on your flight) will clear US immigration prior to boarding your aircraft in Toronto and you will arrive in Dallas as if it was a domestic flight.

Not a K-1 visa general discussion topic... moving thread to more appropriate forum

Really ? Why would they take your envelope? I thought your just going to give it to port of entry in US soil? I'm pretty sure their not gonna look for a visa being in Canada since its a connecting flight. Its not your fault. You'll be in Canada as long as you're not going anywhere aside from being inside the airport. I know when I had lay over in Taiwan they just look at the passport and the ticket. They don't ask for a visa being in Taiwan. ^^

This will sound strange to you but they will take you envelope in Canada because you will be processed by US immigration. Why? because the US has the border guards at the airport in CANADA

YMMV
