Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a "punch" that will stun world powers during this week's 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution. "The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned," Khamenei, who is also Iran's commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel.

His comments came as Iran said it would begin to produce higher enriched uranium from Tuesday, in defiance of Western powers trying to ensure the country's nuclear drive is peaceful.

This year's anniversary is expected to become a flashpoint between security forces and supporters of opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who charge that the June re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was rigged.

Over the past eight months, several thousand people were arrested. Some were released and others were given hefty prison terms, among them politicians, journalists and human rights activists.

Two protesters were tried, convicted and hanged in the aftermath of the election.

Enter stage left where the defender's will say 'punch' really means 'hug'.

"People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along? Can we get along?"

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Does this mean Iran will strike a neighbor? Or launch a weapon?

Its more likely they mean to clamp down on the opposition party on the 11th, which they already claim is a product of the west instead of their own draconian rule.

So, what exactly are we to be expecting on Thurs Feb 11th?

Well, the title of this thread was really taken out of context. It's no secret that Iran sees the West as the driving force behind the latest series of opposition movements and what Khamenei was really saying is that in this next protest the world will see a united Iran not a divided Iran.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a televised address to the air force, insisted Iran would demonstrate unity and "give all arrogant powers a punch in the mouth" on Thursday.

I don't know if the numbers reported though are really going to be that big since opposition numbers for the Green Movement have only reached to the tens of thousands in the past 8 months and nothing like the 3 million they are estimating for the coming event this Thursday as mentioned in the LA Times World article I sourced for my quote. Also the reported numbers for the pro-government side with 500,000 in forces and another 12,000 militiamen to keep the crowds in control remains to be seen.

Olivia, the world will not see Iran as united... Theres too many in opposition to the political corruption going on over there. Theres nothing there to be united with.

Tamara I'm not saying the world will see it as united. I'm saying that is what the Supreme Leader meant with his statement in reference to the countries inner turmoil because of the opposition movements. It is his hope that they can control what is going to take place this Thursday.

The pro-government regime has already stated before this coming protest on Thursday that they will no longer tolerate the opposition movement. That means a big smack down on anymore organized protests on holiday events. Suppression is one way to control their masses. With the latest executions you know what they say "Kill one and frighten 10,000."

I'm not sure how another staged pro-government demonstration will "stun" the world powers. He may just be hyping up the significance to assure his worries.

There's also the possibility they may have some type of weapon that they think will freak out the West. If' it's not a nuke, it won't mean much. Maybe a big arms deal with Russia or China?

I'm betting they release their very first "Iranian Idol" contest!!!

Simon will be hosting.

They already had a version of that show before. The bad contestants were stoned to death for poor singing and dressing like whores and homosexuals.

Well from all the reports I've been reading they are linking in Iran's nuclear ambitions a lot. Ahmadinejad announced their going to open 10 new nuclear facilities. However, experts and weapons inspectors are saying Iran doesn't have the resources for this currently. It could be a deal with Russia or China being announced but I'm not sure how that is possible. Russia has taken the stance against Iran's nuclear ambitions if they are not peaceful. Iran does have the second largest oil reserve and I know China has been reporting as seeking oil for their growing population demand so that may be the answer to Iran's resource issue for their nuclear ambitions. Also China is the only country lobbying for the West to continue talks with Iran instead of implementing sanctions and China and the USA are not on the best of terms lately.

When Khomeini was addressing the air force and said: "give all arrogant powers a punch in the mouth" he was referencing the green movement and the perceived instigators behind it that being the West per usual. The following is the actual quote and context:

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a televised address to the air force, insisted Iran would demonstrate unity and "give all arrogant powers a punch in the mouth" on Thursday. He issued a stern warning to those who continue to oppose the June reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, describing them as agents of the deposed monarchy.

The struggle going on there has been described by scholars and analysts as a civil rights movement because of the numbers involved only reaching the tens of thousands in the past eight months and mostly University students participation. But if the numbers do escalate to the millions which is way over the hundreds of thousands we've seen in the 1979 revolution then it is more than a civil rights movement because of the basis of support growing. The people in charge of Iran have been accused of a human rights crisis since the election in June and the suppression of the protesters and executions of their people without defense in a trial. The Supreme Leaders authority has been brought into question and at first they were attempting to show a tolerant society but now they have issued they will no longer tolerate the opposition movement because they believe it is becoming a threat to those in power and a revolutionary movement that is believe by their leadership to be fueled by the West. Whenever protests occur it is organized online and around holidays. The government monitors and controls their communication there by slowing down their internet when a protest is coming and shutting down cell phone services. Many people have fled to Turkey as refuges to avoid being kills but they still participate in the movement via internet. The West has interfered in their government by supporting the protesters cry for freedom anyway they can so the west is not entirely innocent here either. Last June when I was in Egypt I watched the news and the protests happening in Iran on satellite and saw our Government called for Twitter to not update their system as they had planned because protesters in Iran were using it as a way of communication with each other and the outside world for what was happening in Iran since no foreign reporters were allowed to report on what was happening in Iran. Also human rights watch groups in NYC have been monitoring the abuses in Iran and lobbying at the UN so I can see how Iran would say this is fueled by the Wests interference. Even the Green Movement have claimed themselves that the majority of the college students who are participating just want their freedoms like the West and the right to choose to wear the hijab or not or different clothing, ect. So the current leaders who were the original Iranian Revolution group who over threw the West obviously see the Western ideals and culture being applied to their youth movement as an invasion on what they've worked so hard for the last 30 years to establish there which is this independent Islamic sharia society that is pure to their holy ideals and functions outside the parameters of the western influences.
