Hi all,

I have a question on changing last names after marriage. I have gone to Social Security Office to change my last name to my husband's last name. However, it's been almost 4 weeks since we went to SSA and they still haven't sent me a new SS card with my changed last name.

I was wondering if I use my husband's last name in AOS packets without having a valid SS card with my changed name, is that okay? Will I have any problems?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

LC

Well the thing is I do have an SS card with my name on it before marriage. I was just wondering if it'll pose a problem if I use it for AOS package... coz they haven't sent me the updated SS card with my married name. Thank you!

Having a social security card/number is not required to file AOS - neither is having one in which ever name you end up using on the AOS forms (for example, you could have one in maiden name but be filing AOS in married name).

You can inquire at the SSA office for your number. That's what I did before receiving my card in the mail.

Hey Scott & LC! Don't worry it honestly doesn't matter. I filed my AOS in November using my new name. I had to wait until I had my EAD (2 months later) before SS would change my name as my work visa only had a few weeks left on it.

So like you guys my Social Security card was in my maiden name while my AOS papers were in the new name. I didn't have any problems. Got it changed a few weeks before the interview (two months after i'd mailed AOS) Actually USCIS seem pretty aware of these kind of situations. MY IO actually asked me at the interview if i'd had any problems changing my name at DMV/SS. So you should be all set, good luck with filing
