Hi! I have question regarding I-485 interview. For the interview, USCIS agent will ask my wife (K1-visa) and I some questions for green card approval. I can certainly answer my own questions, but as the agent asks my wife questions, am I allowed to interpret for her for the question since her English is limited? Do we really need to pay and bring a third-person interpreter on our own? Does anyone have experience on this? Thanks.

Yes you will. Because you could easily answer the questions for her with the correct answer if she doesn't say it.

There have been several posts about this, one in particular a guy had to walk around the reception area looking for someone who spoke his language and could interpret for him (he got lucky thankfully).

Does the interpreter have to have a license or can be anyone like friends as a third-person as long as that person can translate? Thanks.

Alex - it could be anyone. If you are 'around' SFO, you should not have a problem finding somebody.

Word to the wise, though - DO NOT engage a person from Taiwan - they will sabatoge yer lass at the interview.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Typically USCIS doesn't want the spouse to be the 'interpreter' (I'm sure you can understand why) - you could bring a third party (doesn't have to be an official interpreter). You can review the adjudicator's field manual (search for interpreter) to see what they say about it. LINK.

** Topic is AOS-interview related; moving thread to "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas"
