This may be a dumb question, but I have very little experience with checks, so please forgive me!

When they say to pay using a personal check so you can track the payment; do they just mean so you can check it against your bank statement to see when it cleared your bank? Or is there a special process involved in "tracking the payment"?

No. It's like you said. You can see the cheque's been cashed. That said though it doesn't it was USCIS that did it, maybe i'm missing in that regard..

GJen,

If you have online access to your bank you can view the check that USCIS cashed. On the back of the check is the receipt number (will start with a WAC for CSC filings and EAC for VSC filings). Then go to: https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/Dashboard.do and enter your receipt number. You will see that USCIS has received your petition and you can sign up for email and text message updates.

Neat!

"To view the status of a case, please enter the corresponding application receipt number. The 13-character application receipt number can be found on application notices you have received from the USCIS."... so that means once we get a NOA, we'll have the application receipt number and be able to track it that way?

Yes, but also as Alan said, they will type the receipt number (at least the AOS) one on the back of the cheque and when you "view" your personal cheque through your bank you will see that number. Though if you signed up for email/text updates you will also get the receipt numbers by text/email.

I don't understand. =/

How can I view the back of my personal check when I send it in to them and they make a copy of it, draft from my checking, and then destroy the original?

How do I go about signing up for the email/text updates?

So according to that website, text/email notification are only available when filed at one of three USCIS facilities that are located in chicago, IL, Phoeniz, AZ, and Lewisville, TX...

Is that right or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Thanks! :)

Hi Jen

When the USCIS cashes your check your will see it as a debit from your bank account. For example when you check your account you will see $455.00 was taken from your account electronically. They will process your check electronically and will not place a stamp on your check.

This is the first sign that your case has been processed. A few days after your check has been cashed, you should receive a letter in the mail from the USCIS which is NOA1. The letter will have your receipt / case number in the top right side of the page and you can then register your account on the USCIS website to receive updates on your case. After you register your account you can decide if you want to get notice of updates by e-mail, text message or both.

Also uou don't need to file this G-1145 form to get updates. You can do this at the USCIS site once you get your case number. I registered our account on the site and it takes just a few minutes.

It took us 88 days for our petition to get approved. It was a long wait but once you get the approval things start moving pretty quickly.

I hope this helps you.
