Iran's Supreme Leader: West can't save Israel

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said Sunday that Western support of Israel was ineffective, telling a top Palestinian militant leader that its obliteration was imminent according to the will of God.

"Today Palestine is the symbol of life, determination, faithfulness, diligence, and dignity," Ayatollah Khamenei told Ramadan Abdullah, the secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement.

He praised the Palestinian resistance movement and declared that it had proven itself stronger despite the military superiority of the Israel Defense Forces.

In his comments, Khameini joined a long list of top Iranian officials, especially President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who have said on several occasions in the past that Israel should be destroyed.

Last year Ahmadinejad said that Israel was "dying" and that people in the Middle East would destroy it if given the chance and stressed that opposition to Israel is a fundamental principle in Shi'ite Muslim Iran.

"They should know that regional nations hate this fake and criminal regime and if the smallest and briefest chance is given to regional nations they will destroy [it]," said Ahmadinejad, who often rails against Israel and the United States.

A 2005 statement by Ahmadinejad saying that "Israel should be wiped off the map" outraged the international community.

Also, a senior Iranian army commander said Iran will respond to any military attack from Israel by "eliminating" it, in comments condemned by Washington.

I've heard that Ahmadinejad's fanaticism doesn't mean much because he's not the supreme Iranian leader. Ayatollah Khamenei sounds like another Iranian with his turban too tightly wound. The Palestinian resistance didn't militarily defeat the IDF. I don't think Israel is going to be obliterated anytime soon.

The Patriots are a great system. But they are NOT Star Wars (aka SDI - Strategic Defense Initiative). The former is a strictly ground-based system to counteract a (relatively) small number of tactically launched inbound missiles. The latter is a ground and SPACE based system (hence then name...) intended to counteract a massive first-strike Soviet offensive of ICBMs. Entirely different threat-profile and intended response. They are not at all the same system. SDI has never gotten past the planning stages. Patriots have been in deployment since the first Gulf War, 1991.

In Iran, Inflation Could Threaten Regime

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continues to face protests at home and the possibility of international sanctions abroad, but the biggest threat to his rule is something more banal: inflation. Iran's official inflation rate has now reached 13.5 percent, but the actual rate could be twice as high. And it looks likely to get worse. Come spring, the government plans to stop subsidizing basic goods and will instead give cash directly to poor families. That plan, as well as Ahmadinejad's push to give out more loans, will expand the cash supply and likely drive inflation higher still. Efforts to combat rising prices have so far failed. Two weeks ago the Finance Ministry capped daily bank withdrawals at $15,000. According to reports on opposition Web sites, several banks in Tehran and Isfahan were subsequently swamped by desperate customers, and in at least one case police had to be called in.

Political protesters plan a large rally on Feb. 11, the anniversary of the 1979 revolution. If they're joined by ordinary Iranians fed up with the dismal economy, it may be a case of history repeating itself.
