Green card in three months from filing - woo hoo!

Well, after filing for my green card in early November (married 30th October), I received it in the post in under three months (about two weeks ago) - which pretty much blew my mind. No interview, no nothing following the biometrics.

My next step is to get a learner's permit. However, the requirement to apply for a LP is that I have a SSN with work authorisation. My current SSN states 'VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORISATION'. My question is, do I need to visit the SSN office again to update my card now that I have a green card?

Thanks for any advice!

Yes, you should visit the SSA office to let them know you have a green card and are now a permanent resident. They will mail you out a new SSC that does not have that restriction on it. Don't surrender your old card before you get the new one.

But no, you don't have to do that specifically in order to get the learner's permit. The green card IS "DHS authorization" to work.

[strictly speaking, the EAD card, if you applied for one, would have worked as well. I got my driver license using my EAD.]

CSC has been very zippy about GC approvals recently. A good-sized chunk of the October 2009 AOS filers (myself included) got our approvals in a 2-2.5 month timeframe.

Yeah, we sent in the AOS packet for my wife on 17th of Oct, and just got the 10 year GC on the 27th of Jan.

Not quite 2-2.5 months, but wow, much faster and easier than I thought it would be. So easy and painless it's almost an anti-climax. You expect every question under the sun, but if your situation is relatively "normal" it's generally smooth sailing.

You don't HAVE to - federal agents aren't going to bust your door in or anything. It's just a good idea. You are entitled to a SSC with no restrictions on it. It's much less confusing for the HR people you'll be showing it to to get hired, and it keeps your SSA records up to date. And it's kinda like a rite of passage of sorts: it completes your collection of federal id cards :)

I heard from one of my co worker that you need to go back to ss and notify them about your status. It should be okay to show that ss when you go to get permit. Your ss will remain the same it just won;t have that "valid for work only with DGS authorization."

Disturbingly, I think I might be!

Why else would I have become a heavy poster here, starting primarily AFTER I got my 2-year GC?

Part of it is giving back to the community, I suppose. This place helps you out so you want to pay it forward, so to speak.

Part of it is: you've filled your head with all of this specialized knowledge, and it's hard to let go when you don't need it anymore. You're so used to thinking this stuff through it's hard to forget about it. That's the withdrawal part I think.

And I wonder if for some, it's a continuation of something they had to deal with a lot in the home country before they moved here, and that continuing with it is therefore a kind of way of dealing with homesickness.

Wow, US federal immigration bureaucracy as a little piece of Canada to hold on to... I'm a sick puppy :P

Thanks to everyone for their input! I will try and get to the SS office next week. Very exciting to have my green card.

Congrats! We're on the same state. Where exactly your AOS being processed? ^^ hope mine too.

I obviously filed at the Chicago lockbox, but the processing was handled in California - I received a letter sometime in December informing me that my application was being moved from Vermont to the CSC with no explanation. I can now say I think it was a good thing!

Congratulations!! :thumbs::dancing:

We were casual about getting Meryll's SSN card updated. It is an hours drive to the SS office, so we picked a day where we had other business in the area.

When i went to get my LP I didn't need a SSN (until now, no SSN) but i'm from FL - could be different.
