Getting Married in Malaysia and Filing for CR1.

Hie fellow VJ-ers,

I would just like to know if there are any US citizens on VJ who got married to a Malaysian in Malaysia, and then filed for CR1. Any information would be helpful to me and my US citizen boyfriend :) [i'm Malaysian.] We think that filing for CR1 would be much better than filing for K1.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hie, thanks for your response. I've read the guides and both of us roughly know what to expect for either K1 or CR1. I guess I just want to know who has gone through the US Embassy in Malaysia for CR1. As far as I can tell, from VJ, most Malaysian beneficiaries go through K1 instead of CR1.

Thanks again.

Most of it comes down to your personal situation and what works best.

If you are married already K-3 and CR1 are your options. If you are not married yet and want to start the process right away, K-1 is the way to go.

Other questions to consider, are where do you want to get married? (K-1 is not an option if you want to get married in Malaysia, but you could still have a Reception in Malaysia and then get married after entering on K-1 in the US.

How quickly do you want to be together in the US? ( K-1 might be the best option here, although CR-1 is a cheaper route to a green card)

Thank you for your response! :) Nate and I are still thinking about what route we should take. We're going back and forth between K1 and CR1. K1 is a little faster but the AOS part of the journey is a hassle, and CR1 is a little slower but it is cheaper and I can get a Green Card immediately.

We don't mind getting married either in the US or Malaysia. Still thinking about it. Yeah, we're quite undecided right now :P We're just researching and considering and praying, too.

Thank you again.

Honestly, AOS is not really a hassle if you follow the guidelines and send in whatever the USCIS requires. I went the K-1 route because I just wanted to be with my now hubby faster and going through the AOS was quite a breeze simply because I was already with him here. I cannot imagine having to live apart from my husband for 2 years if we're to go with the CR-1 route.

All the best in whatever decision you both make!

Cheers.

  • 10 months later...

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the information.

I am an American marrying a Malaysian woman and we are getting registered in Penang, and then filing for the CR-1 Visa. I decided to document the process on a blog, called Cross Border Marriage, at: http://crossbordermarriage.blogspot.com/

Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly. If you have any suggestion for me, or any questions, please leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer.

Thanks,

Mark
