What I thought was interesting was the author's hypothesis about Mel Gibson's choice to narrow the movie's focus on Jesus' physical suffering in what I also agree was a very sadist view.

Why is it sadist to accurately depict the crucifixion? From articles I have read, Gibson did pain-staking research to accurately depict the events, from the flogging to the crucifixion itself, and his portrayal has been considered very accurate by experts.

Seems like some people want to sugar-coat Christ's death and not think about what he suffered physically. I think it is good for the world, especially Christians, to see a realistic portrayal of His suffering.

That's not true...

He looks at them with unspoken defiance, provoking them to greater determination to break his will by beating him into submission (not unlike an abusive parent with a defiant child). This scene is not in the Bible. Yet, there it is going on before us in brutal sadistic detail made all the more horrific, because, as the fllm makes clear, Jesus has chosen crucifixion.

Sugar coat? Huh? Who ever sugar coated the crucifixion? It's a matter of focus.

That's the opinion of one person. I saw the movie several times, and I did not consider it excessively brutal or sadistic (and I am not a blood-thirsty savage). I considered it a realistic interpretation. I don't know who the guy is that wrote that piece, but I don't consider him any more of an expert than I am.

I'm not accusing you personally of sugar-coating the crucifixion, but it seems like a lot of the folks I've encountered who complain about the movie say it was too bloody, too gorey...well, that's what killing someone is. If you skip over that, you are skipping over an important part of the story.

At any rate, none of this has anything to do with Mel Gibson driving drunk

Funny how more than half of the article was not devoted to this breaking news, but rather to plugging Mel's films.

Almost makes you think he called the cops to tell them he was driving drunk....! Come and get me!

Is he that desperate for free publicity?!

Wow... some tough ##### is this thread. Talk about kicking a man when he's down.

1. Never had a DUI (knock on wood)

2. I could take or leave Mel Gibson.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

It's sadistic because it removes the context. In itself the movie doesn't provide any deeper understanding of Jesus' life and works (or indeed the symbolic meaning of his death) outside of what you take with you into the theatre.

All that you have left is essentially a sadistic, and very bloody murder. The movie does not stand up on its own.

Gibson Sorry After DUI Arrest

Mel Gibson apologizes after DUI arrest

Police report alleges actor made ‘barrage of anti-Semitic remarks’

Updated: 11:52 p.m. ET July 30, 2006

MALIBU, Calif. - Mel Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for saying “despicable” things to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol.

“I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable,” the actor-director said without elaborating.

The entertainment Web site TMZ posted what it said were four pages from the original arrest report, which quoted Gibson as launching an expletive-laden “barrage of anti-Semitic remarks” after he was stopped early Friday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

According to the report, in addition to threatening the arresting deputy and trying to escape, Gibson said, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” and asked the officer, James Mee, “Are you a Jew?”

Gibson publicist Alan Nierob would not comment on the incident beyond the written statement.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. John Hocking said he could not confirm the TMZ report, and detectives would begin investigating Monday. Deputies at the Malibu sheriff’s station referred calls to headquarters. Numerous calls to other sheriff’s officials were not returned, and attempts to locate Mee, the deputy, were also unsuccessful.

The Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site late Saturday that the sheriff’s department’s civilian oversight office will investigate whether authorities gave Gibson preferential treatment and tried to cover up his alleged behavior.

Sheriff Lee Baca defended his department’s handling of the case.

“There is no cover-up,” Baca told the Times. “Our job is not to (focus) on what he said. It’s to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumor and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity.”

In his statement, Gibson apologized for what he called “my belligerent behavior” when he was taken into custody.

“The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person,” he said.

“I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse.”

He said he was taking “necessary steps to ensure my return to health.”

Gibson, 50, was arrested after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding at 2:36 a.m. Friday. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Sounds like it was a little more than just drunk driving
