I (applicant) live in Nebraska and my wife (petitioner) lives in North Carolina. I'm in school in Nebraska and the Omaha, NE office had jurisdiction over my case. For a host of reasons, my wife and I want the case to be transfered to North Carolina so we can have our interview there. I did the address change online. Will that alone be enough to have my case transfered to NC, or will I have to take some other steps?

Did you remember to send the paper form as well?

Just to clarify, you don't actually need to send something in. I did it online for the I-130, and my husband did it for the I-485 and I-765. There is NOTHING to send it, although it says there is. We called the number to be sure, because the wording was confusing. The guy at the number (for change of addresses) said he simply sits there and fills out the same form that is available online. He just waits for people to call. He said as long as the applicant goes through both processes online (the AR-11 and the second piece which it guides you to) you are fine. Within two weeks we both received confirmation with our change of address in the system AND on our applications.

So again..

The USC: files the AR-11 online for the I-130 only

The Applicant: files the AR-11 and updates for applications on I-485/I-765/I-131(if applicable)

What paper form? The AR-11? I filled out the online version.

if you have a pending case , MAKE SURE that besides changing address on-line (form AR-11) YOU CALL to US CIS and make sure that operator will make changes in the system and than you will receive notification ( within several days ) that address has been changed . This letter you will receive on new address .

Look at my post from yesterday regarding problems we faced with changing address on-line .

Thanks for the information. My main question is whether changing the address is enough to also change which office has jurisdiction over my case. My case is being processed by the Omaha office. But I want it to be processed by the Raleigh-Durham office instead. Would changing my address also move my case to Raleigh.

Let's say, for example, when my wife and I started the process, we lived in California. Then we move to New York. What should be do to prevent USCIS from calling us all the way back to Cali for the interview? Will changing the address on the application to the new NY address be enough for them to move the case there?

I don't know as I haven't been in this position. I would assume (haha.. funny i know) that they would transfer the case to the nearest office to your new residence. It may take a week or so extra in your timeline, but I don't think that extra time would be noticeable. Like Alice said, confirm on the phone that you have changed your address, and ask them what the process is with the changing of the local office... They would be best able to tell you.

You should also look at posting in the forums that totally deal with the USCIS offices and local centers as this isn't just a AOS question.

Laura

I was not aware that I was posting in an incorrect forum. I guess I will wait and see what USCIS says when I call.
