Hi Everybody,

I just wondered if there was anything about the USA that you like better than your homeland. I read a lot about things people don't like so I'd like to hear if anything in this county is good. I haven't had a chance to travel the world so I don't really have a good point of reference.

And one specific question:

Are the people you've met here more or less friendly than your homeland?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi !

Many many things are better in the US !! Im french, and I really think you have good food, much more diversity than we have in France, alot of different flavours, more spices,.....

Stores are more convenient in the US (the whole country is not closed at lunch time !!), open 7/7, 24/24, that's cool !

Most things are cheaper, dont have to pay high taxes on everything, people have more rights and freedom, beautiful school buses and trucks, good music, ....

And to answer your specific question : people are much more friendly in the US !! people are pretty "cold" in France, they dont smile, they dont talk to each other.

Thanks very much for your reply!

My wife Jena would like to point out a positive.

She says she felt very comfortable going to college here even though she was not fresh out of highschool. People might feel more awkward about going to school in her home country after they are older.

 I agree, I completed my bachelors degree in 2001 and have enrolled myself at the UT Austin for masters and it is a more comfortable environment for people like me. In India if you are even a year older than the rest of the class population you can feel very out of place.

other thing I love is the opportunity for a great outdoor experience which in India is not possible as much because of the weather and ofcourse the population (can't find many untouched places anymore)

What I like better about US is the price of electronics and cars, which are a lot cheaper than in my country.

People in my country are a lot more friendly though.

Some of the things, from my experience. Quality is recognized, and if you work hard (once you find a job, of course), you will be awarded. Things are cheaper, especially food and clothes, it is easier to obtain a vehicle and driving license (which is a must anyway), and yes...I love tax returns.

And there are more things that I find great about America each and every day.

The study surveyed 2,155 expats in 48 countries, spanning four continents, between February and April 2008. Respondents rated their country in four categories: ability to befriend locals, number that joined a community group, number that learned the language and percentage that bought property.

1) Canada

2)Germany

3)Australia

4)U.K.

5)India

I agree with this list, Australian's are definitely friendlier.

To be honest there's a lot about America that makes me miss home. The poor education rate (Australia is 1st on the education index, America is 19th, on par with Lithuania!), and the horrid chocolate being two of them. I don't HATE being here, but it definitely is different and makes me appreciate home more.

Things I like, definitely cheaper here. Jeans! Jeans are everywhere and they come in all sizes and fit SO much better than jeans at home (unless you pay out of the nose for them!). Electronics are cheaper (can't believe the price of a nice sized flat screen LCD TV! and Kitchenaid mixers!), food is cheaper, movie tickets, jewellery etc are all cheaper and there's a wide variety of almost everything you can think of, making your choice HARDER :P. Oh, the $1 menu at Maccas (McDonalds)

Those are really the only things aside from my husband being here.

Australia has better healthcare, better education, better workmanship, nicer people, my family, better support for low income earners, better chocolate, better lollies/candy, better Maccas (it's cooked fresh). I say "better" but I suppose I mean different, I do miss a lot about home but I'm trying to remember that America is a different country with different ways and it will just take some getting used to.

Ahhh where in Australia are you from?? and where in America are you living? American's are definitely NOT as nice as Australian's... but this could be an "area" thing (or an age thing perhaps?). Not saying they're awful, but you go for averages, Australian's win hand's down.

1) My job stability is based on my work performance not which political party is in power (imagine losing your job every time there is a political power change  )

2) Reliable postal service

3) getting loads of money for college education :innocent:

4) all the different cultures, traditions and peoples

the snow is so pretty

You have your opinion and I have mine

My experience is based on being a foreign-born Aussie and I feel there is more discrimination in Australia towards people of my kind

Oh and Kiwis are friendlier than Aussies too (I'm not kiwi-born but that's where I lived prior to moving to Australia)
