Hello i live in jamaica and my fiance lives in the US he is a greencard holder for 6years and we wanted advice to know is it better to get married before he apply for his citizenship or should he apply first then we get married. plz help

My friend married first then filed for her citizenship. It's not a good idea to wait for your citizenship first because sometimes you can run into problems especially when it comes to the name check.

You undoubtedly posted your question in the wrong place, as it's unclear what you intend to do re. immigration, and why you're asking the question. Let me try to unravel it for you. :innocent:

You posted in the K1 forum, but your profile says you filed for a K3. If your fiance is an LPR and not a US citizen, then he isn't eligible to petition for either a K1 or a K3. He won't become eligible to petition for either of these visas until he becomes a US citizen.

Getting married won't have any effect on his citizenship, or vice versa. However, once he becomes a citizen then he WILL be eligible to petition for either the K1 or K3. After he becomes a US citizen, if you're not married yet then he can petition for a K1 fiance visa. If you ARE married at that point, then he can petition for a K3 spousal visa, though a CR1 is preferred over a K3 for several reasons.

Permanent residents may petition for the immigrant spousal visa CR1 or IR1.

But the foreign spouse must wait for an immigrant visa number which protracts the process.

It is not unheard of for the permanent resident to petition for the spousal visa and then file their own application for naturalization. Upon naturalization, the spousal petition may be "bumped up" past those waiting for an immigrant visa number.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Yes about waiting for priority date. No about CR1 or IR1. The IR1 and CR1 are only for spouses of US citizens. Spouses of LPR's must apply for an F2A visa. An F2A from Jamaica would take about 4 years.

IMO, he should apply for his citizenship and then apply for either the K-1 or K-3 or CR1, depending on if you want to marry in the US or Jamaica. Right now, those visas are running about the same time in the approval process.

Otherwise, yes, you are waiting on a number to be issued and that is a very long time.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
