goldin03 - how did it go on the 26th? mainly... did you get your oath the same day? going there myself on Tuesday the 2nd. Let me know if you get this.

Thanks, novahunter! Glad to hear you got your case transferred as well. You'll probably get your letter in the next 4-5 days, though it took almost a week for me... but then we're in central VA, not NOVA. Hopefully everything will go smoothly as they ship our A-files from the NBC to Fairfax...

Updating my oath date. Interview went well. I was asked the questions after the Officer went through the application. He complained that questions are very easy and need to be made more difficult and said he was amazed some people still failed the test .

The questions I remember:

1- What is an amendment?

2- Who did the US fight with in World War II

3- What do cabinet members do?

4- What do the stars represent on the flag

I had my interview on Wednesday, May 26 at the Fairfax (washington, D.C.) DO. Here is how it went:

My scheduled time was 10:20 am. My wife and I arrived at the DO at about 9:00 am.

It took us a few minutes to figure out where to park. There is a large Metro commuter parking lot on the opposite side of the street from the USCIS building at 2675 Prosperity Ave., but this was full by the time we got there. We ended up parking at the multi-story parking ramp behind the USCIS building, which is the "long-term" Metro parking. We paid $5.00 at the exit, which is their rate for the whole day. (They do accept cash!) The entrance to the USCIS offices is from the Prosperity Ave (front) side of the building. We lined up in the entryway, between the outside and inside doors, and waited for the security guards to let us into the lobby (two people at a time). We then went through the "airport-style" check, where they X-rayed our bags and had us go through a metal detector. We were asked to show our appointment letter and then told to take the elevator to the second floor.

The second floor is, essentially, one large waiting room with two doors leading back to the actual offices where interviews are conducted. As you enter the waiting area, you can see the large Reception desk in the middle. The receptionist is not always there, and we had to wait a minute for her to come back. She took the appointment letter and then told us to have a seat and to listen for my name to be called. I was not questioned at all as to why I came much earlier than my appointment time (the letter says to not come sooner than 20 minutes before the appointment time).

As we sat down and waited, we could see all the officers, as they came out to call the next person. Finally, at 10:35 am (only 15 minutes after my scheduled time), my name was called. I had brought with me a whole rolling bag of documents, just in case, but only took a small portfolio of things I thought they would want to see with me. The officer was very polite and courteous and told me that he would do the interview pretty quickly and to tell him if he was going "too fast." Overall, his demeanor was very pleasant, and it was obvious he was trying to put me at ease. When we got to his office, he asked me to remain standing and had me raise my right hand and swear to tell the truth. After that, he had me sit down and asked for my green card, passport, and driver's license. He confirmed my address and cell phone number and a few things (such as my job and marriage history--and even remarked that he thought he saw my wife sitting with me when I confirmed she came with me for the appointment). For the most part, he just flipped through the application and supporting documents in my A-file and checked off things in my application with a red pen.

Once we got to the "question" part of the N-400, he asked only a few of the questions dealing with eligibility. He skipped many of them, just marking them off with his red pen. All in all, he was done with going through my application in about 10-15 minutes. He really gave the appearance of not trying to find issues with my case--which was nice! He really had not asked me for any other documents and even remarked several times that I had sent in "everything they needed."

The only disappointing part came when he asked me if I would be willing to take the oath of allegiance (one of the questions on the form), and I said, "Yes, and the sooner the better!" He replied that it would probably be a few months, because the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia has "exclusive authority" to perform oath ceremonies. If I had lived in the Eastern district, I could have probably had my ceremony on the same day.

After this, he gave me the reading and writing test, as well as the civics test. My reading question was, "Where is the White House?" Then he dictated the answer, "The White House is in Washington, D.C." There were two more reading and writing questions printed out on each sheet of paper he gave me for this part (maybe for those who fail the first one?), but I didn't have to do anything with those. The questions I was asked for civics were:

1. What is an amendment?

2. Who vetoes bills?

3. What is the supreme law of the land?

4. What do we show our loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance?

5. What is the capital of your state?

6. Whom did the U.S. fight in World War II?

I answered all of these correctly, and he recorded the results of those tests on his interview checklist. At this point, he also printed out my information for the Certificate of Naturalization on a white sheet of paper and had me check it and sign it, as well as sign my photos. (He had me use my "usual" signature on all of these.) I also had to sign the bottom of the last page of the N-400, stating that I told the truth and that I am willing to take the oath, etc. He then tried to look up possible oath dates at the local branch of the District Court in my city, but he could not find any at the time. He did say to wait 3-4 months to get the oath letter and then make an InfoPass appointment if I hadn't heard from them by then. The officer then walked me back out to the waiting area and congratulated me.

Overall, this was a very pleasant experience--except for the disappointment of finding out I could not take the oath right then.
