Snow storm bears down on N.J. as evening commute nears

New Jersey salt trucks and snow plows are gearing up for a major snow storm that is expected to blanket the state this weekend, though it appears the start of the snowfall should spare the afternoon commute for workers.

Blizzard conditions are expected along the southern stretch of the shore at the peak of the storm. Snow was predicted to reach 22 inches there — and nearly as high in the Philadelphia suburbs, with less in northern New Jersey.

The National Weather Service said the first flakes would fall this afternoon, with heavy snowfall starting in the evening in most areas.
