Wow...is it normal and commonplace for a guy to get a Valentines gift FROM the lady in his life? Have I been missing out? Do we need a Secret Cupid here on VJ?

Yes, you have been missing out. I don't agree with you at all about the Hallmark holiday thing. Make the day what YOU want it to be, not what is advertised. Yes, we should show our love every day of the year, but do something extra special on a day such as Valentines.

Yup. You have been missing out. Gift giving is a two way street.

I love shopping for Mathew. I get him something every chance that I can get. But then, down here(as in Kentucky, since I don't know everywhere else), most girls get their men something for Valentines Day. Any excuse we can get to buy them new clothes(especially underwear. Mathew thinks they're just good and comfy when they've got holes in them), cologne, food or anything is an awesome day!

I've been working on a journal for Mathew. I've been writing in it a few times a week since we last saw each other and I've written down some recipes for his favorite dishes that I make for him. Then I got him a new blackberry and a new phone number with my Employee Rate Plan thingy through AT&T. He's so excited about the phone.

Hi Everyone,

Lol...Personally, I think that Valentine's Day is overrated..

Why should it be just on only one day of the year to celebrate?

Shouldn't valentine's day be every day and not just some cheesy "hallmark moment"

After all, "Love is year-round"..Indeed....(L)

The little things are the best...:)

No need for fancy gifts......

But if you do insist on a gift...

Don't go with the usual "typical" gifts......

I always find that "unique personalized gifts" are the best.....:)

And this is different to every couple.....depending on their interests, needs, wants, desires, expectations, etc....

To each their own.....And the most important thing is that you spend time together on this special day, regardless of gifts.....;)

Happy Valentine's Day to all...Enjoy this special time and celebrate this love for each other together...(L)

The thing is...I utterly LOATHE the concept of "obligatory gift-giving". That applies to Christmas, and any other holiday. I hate the idea that a particular day should be singled out for such a thing...especially when it's in the name of a Saint I have no piety for. Sure, I've ordered my wife a box of chocolates to be delivered on Friday...but I know that she doesn't expect them. I have no expectation of a gift FROM her. If I don't get anything from her on V-day, I'm not going to feel the least bit left out.

I'd be a bit upset if she didn't get me anything on my birthday, since that has a singular meaning that is important to both of us, but the truth is that she over-splurges on me on my birthday and at Christmas. I fail to see why there is any expectation for such a thing on what is, by most accounts, a shallower holiday that was created by the poet, Geoffrey Chaucer.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm all for generosity and gift-giving for the sake of gift-giving. But seriously...spontaneous and unexpected gifts on occasional days are FAR more meaningful to me than gifts given "just because it's Valentine's Day".

I am curious for some ideas on what to buy a Canadian man for Valentine's Day. I want to get my fiance' something special but I really am at a loss. Any ideas or suggestions or what to avoid buying for this important man?

Well I'd have to go with a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Nothing says 'I love you' more than that.

ROFL! Okay, some very neat ideas and He is in Canada still (go Montreal go), I am in the U.S. He is visiting next weekend (yeah!). We aren't married yet (still waiting on Packet 3 for our K-1 from Montreal and it would be an awesome gift for ANY DAY!). The long distance relationship gift website had some funny ideas. We are a "gifty" couple for the other "more ordinary days" and I was trying to get my mind going on something different.

The special note I will write in his Valentine's card will definitely mean more than any "hallmark" inspired text.

Redenvelope.com has some interesting ideas. The dart board for couples they have just might be the ticket.

I am reading this thread thinking, am I the only one who hates Valentine's Day.

Chris arrived in Edmonton one year on Valentine's Day. And he insisted that we had to go out for a romantic dinner. I refused time and time again. Finally I relented and told him we'd go someplace romantic to appease him.

I took him to the Motoraunt.

Tell me that he had the big burger and you ate in the "romantic" upper deck with the view!!

so yesterday we were at the store and the hubster walks over to the games and grabs the Scrabble Deluxe game and says I want to get you this for Valentine's day... how romantic :P .. but I have always wanted that game so I let him get it and then I said I didn't get you anything and he walks over to this poker chip set and says here get me this ... lol

after getting some games from him for Christmas and now this I told him that for my Birthday I don't want a game :P ...lol

then we spent the evening together watching the Olympics and playing scrabble and poker.. it was fun :D
